Magnitude 7.4 Quake Hits Indonesia


Jakarta, Dec 11 (IANS): A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale hit Indonesia around Tuesday midnight. However, no tsunami warning was issued, authorities here said.

The quake, which struck off Maluku in eastern Indonesia 1653 GMT Monday, had its epicentre at 180 km northwest of Maluku Barat. But there was no potential for tsunami and no immediate report of any damage to property or casualty, reported Xinhua quoting officials.

Though the Indonesian Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said the 7.4-magnitude quake had a depth of 10 km undersea bed, the US Geological Survey measured it to be of 7.2-magnitude and said it had a depth of 155.2 km.
