Mangalore: Survey Work for Much-awaited Mangala Corniche Project Begins

Mangalore, Dec 5: Deputy speaker of legislative assembly N Yogish Bhat on Tuesday December 4 informed that the survey work of Mangala Corniche project has begun and that a 30-km ring road will be constructed in the city based on the Gujarat model .
He spoke at a programme on ‘Town planning exhibition, study report submission’ organized by Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) here on Tuesday December 4.
The upcoming ring road will connect three national highways, NMPT and other important points in the city. "The road will be constructed without violating the CRZ rules, and will not cause any trouble to residential colonies. No toll will be collected," he said.
He added that the preliminary project report was already prepared after the study was conducted.
MUDA chairman Ramesh speaking on the occasion said that as part of the first phase of work in Mangala Corniche project, a 12-km stretch along Netravathi River and Kulur Gurupur River will be developed. Half a kilometer area near the river bank will also be developed along with the road construction work.
"No land acquisition will be done. Instead the people who possess land will be made partners in the project. Public will be kept informed," he assured.
"River bank tourism will be started through the project. Urva Market and Hampankatta areas will also see development," he added.
Twelve students who have been trained in Town Planning Scheme by the center for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) Ahmadabad have prepared the preliminary project report after three months of study. The total cost of the project is estimated to be Rs 4,000 crore. The project is expected to yield Rs 8,000 crore as profit after its completion, he said.
DC N Prakash, mayor Gulzar Banu, MCC commissioner Dr K Harish Kumar, CEPT University lecturer PVK Rameshwar among others were present.
PVK Rameshwar said that students of CEPT in four teams approached the local people and city corporation members and prepared the report.
The project is concentrated on areas like Sultan Battery, Car Street, Old Port and Morgan's Gate, wherein roads, drainage system, parks, play grounds and markets will see a makeover.
