IOC Suspends Indian Olympic Association

New Delhi/Lausanne (Switzerland), Dec 4 (PTI): In a huge embarrassment for India, the International Olympic Committee today suspended the Indian Olympic Association because of government interference, a development which puts a bar on the country's Olympic participation.

Associated Press, quoting two officials with knowledge of the decision, said that a formal decision about the suspension will be made at the end of the first day's Executive Board meeting here.

The decision was largely expected after the IOA decided to go ahead with the elections tomorrow under the government's Sports Code, defying the IOC's diktat to hold the polls under the Olympic Charter.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the official announcement had not been made yet.

The IOC had repeatedly told the IOA not follow the government's sports code for the elections on the ground that it would be a violation of the Olympic Charter and compromise autonomy. But the IOA went ahead saying they were bound by the Delhi High Court order.

Suspension meant that the IOA will stop receiving IOC funding and its officials will be banned from attending Olympic meetings and events. India's athletes will be barred from competing in Olympic events under their national flag, but they can participate under the IOC banner.

The IOA top brass said that they were not aware of the decision yet as no communication has been sent to them yet.

Sports Minister Jitendra Singh said that it was an "unfortunate decision" for Indian sports community.

"Once we knew about the mess we had written to the IOC but they never responded," Jitendra said.

It may sound absurd but I dont believe in democracy any more, India votes based on caste money liquor and sarees. What else can we expect from the leaders elected from such people. India should be run by emminent people ed by interviews and GD's and debates , based on their qualification experience and expertise. People like Narayan Moorthy, TN Seshan, performing and honest IAS officers should be given the right to run the country and all these old wolves should be thrown out of the parliament. Democracy is the biggest bane and curse of our country.

IOA was formed in 1927. It must have been started with its Articles of rules and regulations which must have been approved by IOC before making it a body functioning it. Did IOA subsequently changed its regulations? If not, what IOC was doing all these years. In first place how IOA's establishment was approved by IOC to be functioning under it? I agree that any sports body should be out of political interference including BCCI. What made IOC to wake up after 85 years of IOA's formation? Why court has to interfer also? Very messy!!!

    Horribly embarrassing!!!
It's ALWAYS India that has the problems in "almost" EVERY sport.
First the hockey federations, then the BCCI and now This!
Doesn't the rest of the world play sports too??
And then they call it an "unfortunate" development! Don't they realize that the whole country is in such a state because UNFORTUNATELY they were elected as the members of the boards?
"decisions" are never smartly and quickly taken by our sports committees! There's always a huge dispute over every silly thing!!

Our senior politicians have shamelessly violated the Code of Olympic Charter at every step. The International Olympic Council (IOC) has suspended Indian Olympic Association (IOA) based on Rules 27.9 and 59.1.4 of the Olympic Charter after several advance warnings. The IOA Secretary General Randhir Singh too was critical of IOA acting president V.K. Malhotra for going ahead with the election as per Government's Sports Code that is against the Code of Olympic Charter. This senior BJP leader, Mr. Malhotra has been the president of Archery Association of India for more than three decades though he is over 80 years old and flaunted all rules.
Now the ‘Aam Aadmi’ should force the politicians to distance themselves from all the Govt sports body and allowed to remain only in the Advisory Body of any Govt Sports Association but not in their utive Body. They can serve any Indian Sports Association only as per the Code of Olympic Charter, i.e. for 4 4 years and their age should be below 70 years at the time of retirement. The government of India and the sports ministry should pass a bill in this direction.
    Jai Hind!

Dinesh Poojary, First understand that suspension means a disgrace to India. According to the Olympic charter, the governing body (in this case IOA) should be an independent body without Government interference. Kalmadi wants to continue as IOA President and the Government is against it. In such a situation Government intervention was necessary. Also the IOA has to follow the Delhi HC order. Whatever has happened is unfortunate and lets hope that the issue is settled amicably without causing any loss or damage to the sports persons of India. After all they represent the country and not UPA, BJP etc.

We as a country could have avoided this mess just by following the Olympic Charter.

    Who cares for our athletes!!!.

In this country every issue has been "Politicized".
What more one can expect from people who are at the helm of affairs do not have the "Basics of Sports" ???
Hope at least now the time has come and they will learn from this current suspension.

An Interesting Observation between 3 old Men & God .........

Three old men went to see God.
The first old man, an American, asked God when will his country come out of recession.
    "100 years," God said.
The American started weeping profusely. "I will not live to see that day"
Second man, a Russian asked God "When will my country become prosperous?"
    "Fifty years," came the reply.
The Russian too started weeping profusely. "I will not live to see that day"

Finally the Indian asked God, "When will my country be free from corruption?"
    God started weeping.
"I will not live to see that day"
