Dubai, Dec 3 : Prominent Konkani writer, orthosurgeon and professor at the department of orthopaedic at Fr Muller Medical College, Dr Edward Nazareth has bagged the prestigious 'Daiji Dubai Literary Award' for the year 2013.
Daiji Dubai, an association of Konkani Writers in the UAE every year recognizes a Konkani literatteur who has contributed immensely to the field of Konkani literature. The award consists of Rs 50,000 cash prize, a citation and a momento.
Dr Edward Nazareth will be the 14th recipient of the award. Prominent personalities like the late WIlfy Rebimbus, the late Jerry Kulshekar, the late Victor Rodrigues, CGS Taccode, J B Moraes, Edwin JF D'Souza, Gladys Rego and others have bagged the Daiji Dubai award in the past.
The award will be conferred on Dr Edward Nazareth during 14th Daiji Dubai anniversary to be held in PPC Auditorium, Udupi on January 26, 2013. This is the first time that the award ceremony and the event are being held outside the UAE.
Announcing the 2013 Daiji Dubai award, Stany Nirude told daijiworld that this year more than 26 applications and recommendations were received for the award. The members of Daiji Dubai met in Dubai on December 1 to decide the final winner.
54-year-old Dr Edward Nazareth has been in the Konkani literary field for the last 40 years, having started writing short stories and articles in Konkani at a very early age. He has published five collections of short stories, two novelettes, 6 medical education books, and thousands of health related articles in different periodicals, websites and other media.
His 'Ask Doctor' column on daijiworld, wherein he answers health-related queries, has been very popular among the readers for the last 10 years.
He is the recipient of Sandesha, Rachana, Konkani Kutam Bahrain, TMA Pai Foundation and Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy awards for his contribution to Konkani literature.
He is married to Dr Nelly Nazareth, an eye specialist. The couple is blessed with three children.
