Udupi, Dec 1: Tragedy struck a picnic party resulting in the death of one person and injuring two others critically at St Mary’s Island, Malpe today.
The deceased has been identified as Dharmendra Jogi (36), a resident of Kuthar, Mangalore. The other two injured are identified as Pratheek and Raviraj. Both are admitted to the nearby hospital and their condition is said to be critical.
It is said that 21 employees of Aravind Motors, Mangalore, had been to St Mary’s island on a picnic. Sources say that it was an official picnic in celebration of the employees achieving the target fixed and they decided to go to St Mary’s Island to celebrate.
Of the 21 employees in the group only 6 had got into the water to play and were enjoying at the island. All of a sudden three of them got washed away in the deep waters. Locals, boat staff and tourists who were present at the site helped to pull out the three and they were rushed to the nearby hospital.
However, Dharmendra was declared brought dead by the hospital authorities and the condition of the 2 is believed to be critical. A case has been registered at Malple Police Station. SI Jayanth of Malpe police station visited the spot of the incident and carried out the investigation.
