Kundapur, Nov 28: In a tragic incident reported here on Wednesday November 28, a couple attempted suicide in a sleeper coach bus they were travelling in. They were on their way to Kundapur from Nelamangala near Bangalore.
The girl died while the boy is said to be critical. Both of them took the extreme step fearing their families' opposition to their marriage, it is said.
The couple was later identified as Manasa, a first-year PUC student in Chikkaballapur PU College, and her boyfriend Manjunath, a student of the same college pursuing second PUC.
The duo boarded the bus on Tuesday night at Nelamangala. Sources said that they were found together in the same sleeper berth, much to the shock of the bus conductor. They did not wake up even after the bus reached Kundapur. It was then that the suicide attempt was discovered. The girl was found dead while the boy was in a critical condition.
Both of them were immediately rushed to Kundapur government hospital, and later Manjunath was shifted to Mangalore Wenlock hospital. Manasa's body has been kept in Kundapur mortuary.
Sachets of 80 tablets of anxinil 0.5 mg and 10 tablets of aluminium phosphide 3g were found in their bus berth. The couple had consumed 50 of the 80 anxinil tablets and emptied the phosphide pack. This led to the suspicion that they had committed suicide.
Their identities were established with the help of their bus passes. Manasa's relatives have come to Kundapur.
It is said the couple's parents were opposed to their marriage. It was later learnt that Manjunath had got married to Manasa before taking the extreme step in the bus.
A case has been registered in Kundapur police station.
