Mangalore: Action-packed Kambala at Suratkal Attracts Crowds

Mangalore, Nov 25: It was a day of high action as the maiden Rama-Lakshmana Kambala organized in memory of the late Madhava Prabhu and the late Sarvothama Madhava Prabhu of Madhava Nagar Suratkal, was held at Suratkal near here on Saturday November 24.
Kambala committee president Beluvai Sadananda Shetty and Vittala Maadhava Prabhu inaugurated the event.
A stage programme was held later in the evening at around 5 pm.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Abhaychandra Jain said, "Kambala is Tulunadu’s sport and as farmers we should make the best of it. People are bribed to attend political programmes but an event like Kambala by itself attracts people in large numbers."
MLA Krishna J Palemar said that even though agriculture has taken a backseat in Dakshina Kannada district, rural sports such as Kamabala are being encouraged. "Government has been extending an aid of Rs 1 lac to support kambala," he added.
Mijar Guttu Anand Alva, Manjayarai Siddakatte, Sadashiv Salian Payyottu, Raghachandra Jain were honoured on the occasion.
As many as 88 buffaloes featured in the slush track event. Hundreds of people flocked the venue to watch and cheer the participants.
