Multi-speciality Mangalore Institute of Oncology Inaugurated

Mangalore, Nov 18: The Mangalore Institute of Oncology (MIO), a multi-speciality cancer hospital was inaugurated here at Pumpwell, Kankanady on Sunday November 18.
The hospital was inaugurated by Cancer Victors and by Yuvraj Singh Foundation by releasing balloons into the air and by unveiling a plaque.
Prof Dr M Shantaram Shettty, pro-chancellor of Nitte University presided over the function.
Prof Dr M Abdul Rahiman, former vice-chancellor, Calicut and Kannur universities; Professor Dr M Vijayakumar, director, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore; and Amit Yadav, general manager, Yuvraj Singh Foundation were the main guests.
Cancer Victors Kishan, Prasad, Keshav Kini, Abdur Rehman, Mohan Rao, Jayalatha, V Anandan Kannur, Khatiza shared the dais along with the dignitaries.
Dr Suresh Rao, partner and director of MIO in his introductory message gave a brief overview of the hospital. With a view to provide the best cancer treatment available in the world today to the people of this region, seven eminent oncologists of the city have set up Mangalore Institute of Oncology (MIO), he said.
He said that the hospital is equipped with the new Rapid Arch treatment equipment, an imported machine that is only the second to be imported and used in India, the first being in Yashodha hospital, Hyderabad. "The basic idea is to give a multi-specialty treatment to cancer patients, at a low and affordable cost," he added.
Dr Suresh said that the PET-Ct id being installed to help radiation oncologists to biologically target the tumor. With this installation of machine, the MIO has treated 953 patients with radiation, 1927 patients have been treated with Chemotherapy, he added.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Abdul Rahiman said that he was proud to witness the auspicious occasion. He asked the directors of the hospital to appoint two qualified scientists to help the doctors in research and wished them luck in their future endeavours.
On the occasion, cricketer Yuvraj Singh's inspirational message was displayed on the screen.
Mohan Rao, one of the cancer victors said that he had undergone hectic life and mental agony for the past 14 years due to cancer. "Four doctors played an important role in bringing my life back to normal," he said, urging cancer victims to fight the disease bravely.
Dr Jallaluddin Akbar, director of MIO welcomed and Reena compered.
Dr Sanath Hegde, Dr Krishna Prasad, Dr Rohan Gatti among others were present.
