New Delhi, Nov 16 (IANS): The left parties want a debate and vote on foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail in the upcoming winter session of parliament, CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury said Friday.

Addressing a press conference ahead of the winter session of parliament, Yechury said the Left will give notice for a debate on FDI in retail under rules that entail voting.

"The Left wants vote on FDI in parliament, we want the government to understand the reality," Yechury said.

"We want the session to function, we want that this should not be a repeat of last session which was washed out," he said adding that the washout was due to a "match fixing" between ruling Congress and main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"We are appealing to all other parties that FDI in multi-brand retail is not in favour of the country. We are in discussion with the other secular opposition parties," Yechury added.

The winter session of parliament starts Nov 22.
