Sharjah, Nov 10: Konkan Bells an association of 10 parishes of Beltangady deanary organized a sports meet to celebrate their first anniversary at Sharjah Wonderers Club grounds on Friday November 9. The day was perfect to hold an open tournament of throwball, volleyball and kabaddi with all Kannadiga teams of UAE joining in. The event also marked Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations.
The main attraction of the event was the presence of Mamatha Poojary, the captain of Indian women's kabaddi team and gold medalist in the last Asian Games.
Hailing from Yennehole, Karkala taluk, Mamatha was cheered on by the participants and the crowd and was a accorded warm welcome.
Large crowds gathered to witness the best teams vye with each other to clinch the top honours. Bunts Dubai defeated Abu Dhabi Karnataka Sangha in ladies throwball and Mangalore Konkans defeated Mogaveers in men's throwball match. Saifa Chilly Willy Friends took away the volleyball championship from Ace Spikers in a tightly fought match and New Mark defeated Bhatkal Friends to lift the Kabaddi trophy. All the matches witnessed nail-biting finishes.
The inaugural ceremony began at 9 am with Rohith D’Souza and Roshini Lobo making the early morning announcement, inviting all the teams (12 teams in men’s volley ball and 8 each in men and ladies throwball, 12 teams in men’s kabaddi), to form lines. President of Konkan Bells Remy D’Souza escorted the chief guests Mamatha Poojary, Walter Nandalike, editor-in-chief of Daijiworld.com and Walter Periera, the main sponsor of the sports meet.
Mamatha Poojary inaugurated the sports and called upon the all the participants to uphold the spirit of the game and maintain the dignity of sportsmanship. Earlier Remy D‘Souza expressed his thoughts and thanked everyone who contributed to organize this mega event. Rony Byndoor and his team from Karval Milan sang Jai Jagadishwa to invoke god’s blessing. Prescilla Pinto took oath on behalf of all players for the smooth functioning of the day's events.

All league matches were completed before lunch time and the afternoon was set aside for the much-awaited semi-finals and finals between the best teams.
The vegetarian lunch buffet was arranged by Woodlands Restaurant, Sharjah. Snacks counters served the delicious food throughout the day.
Prominent personalities and sponsors including Mamatha Poojary and other were present for the concluding ceremony. Rohith D’Souza, master of ceremony of the tournament thanked all the sponsors, well-wishers, media representatives, participating teams and the referees Sudhakar Alva, Satish Shetty, Naveen, Dancy, Moideen, Ganapathi Bhat and Lokanath who officiated the tournament excellently. They were felicitated.
He also thanked members of the organizing committee and all the spectators without whose support the tournament would not have been possible. He also rendered special thanks to Vinod Shetty for giving live commentary for the day-long tournament.
Raffle ticket draw was held and prizes were distributed to the winners. There was a brief entertainment programme by the kids of Feat Beat group. During the concluding ceremony trophies were distributed to winning teams and individual trophies were given to all finalists by the sponsors and prominent personalities.

Konkan Bells arranged glittering trophies for the winners and the runners-up. The winners were also felicitated with cash prizes of Dhs 1,000 each and runners-up with Dhs 750 each. All the team members were individually honoured with cups and plaques .
The spirit of all the members of Konkan Bells is highly laudable, for putting in their best efforts to host a successful tournament in their maiden venture. The fun-filled day concluded at around 8 pm.
