Mangalore, Nov 2: Karavali Karnataka Janabhivraddhi Vedike organized a campaign ‘Water-Our Right, Our Life’ by staging a street play in front of the Mangalore City Corporation here on Friday November 2.
The street play was performed by ‘Tharikita Kala Kammata’.
The play highlighted the threats to water security, wastage of water, unequal distribution of water to public and industry and the effects of water shortage.
The play also created awareness among the audience depicting the problems faced by people due to water scarcity.
Speaking after the play, Vidya Dinker, coordinator of KKJV said that citizens are accountable for the misuse of water to a certain extent as they do not question the authorities.
She also blamed the city corporation for not monitoring the water supply properly. "The city corporation should take concrete action in this regard," she added.
"We face water scarcity mainly due to allotment of huge gallons of water to industries like MRPL, SEZ and others. Hence we should fight collectively for our right to water," said Dinker.
A senior citizen among the public asked people to fight together irrespective of caste, creed and other factors. "Right to water is our birth right. Let us question politicians who come to ask for votes," he said.
The right to water campaign will go on till November 4, during which street plays will be staged across the city.
Olinda Pereira, Hemalatha Bhat, Jyothi, Dinesh Shetty Kulur, ohan Sheni, Ashok Bhat, Celine Aranha, Suresh Shetty, Jyothika Jain among others were present.
