Langoor Attacks 65-year-old Woman

Panaji, Oct 27 (IANS): The Goa forest department are hunting down a grey langoor, who attacked and bit the arm of a 65-year-old woman late Friday at Marcaim, 35 km from here.

The langoor, which has been running rogue for the last several days now, had already attacked several residents in the area, before lunging at Premavati Naik, at her house in Dutle, near Marcaim, last night.

"I was washing clothes when the monkey attacked me and bit my arm. I had fallen on the floor. Only when I started shouting did people come and rescue me," Naik said, after receiving first aid at the local primary health centre.

Forest department officials have now been informed about the incident.

"We had received complaints earlier about a langoor attacking people in the area. This is the most serious case. We are planning to trap it and then relocate it to a forested area," a senior forest department official said.

Man-animal conflict is not new in Goa, with leopards, langoors, even bisons and elephants straying into residential areas, due to excessive deforestation for mining and other commercial purposes.
