Karkala, Oct 25: A 20-year-old student met watery grave while bathing in the Shree Anantapadmanabha Temple pond at Hebri here on Tuesday October 23.
The decease has been identified as Charit Nayak, son of Dr G D Nayak of Hebri.
Charit was an engineering student and had come home on Navaratri holidays.
On Tuesday, he went to the Temple pond along with two of his friends. While his friends finished bathing and came out of the water, Charit dived into the water once again and drowned while swimming. It is said that Charit was not adept at swimming.
Though efforts were made to save him, it was all in vain. Expert divers from Karkala, Hebri and Malpe rushed to the spot and began searching for the body.
Charit's body was found in the evening. The last rites were conducted in Hebri. MLA Gopal Bhandary and many others were present.
Charit was the second son of Dr G D Nayak.
Hebri police have registered a case.
The locals alleged that the Karkala fire brigade personnel who had arrived at the spot did not put in proper efforts in searching for Charit. They claimed that instead of getting into the water to locate the body, the fire personnel only made rounds in the water which delayed the rescue operation.
