Moodbidri, Oct 22: At a time when Konkani plays have become rare in Mangalore and around, as compared to olden days, a team of youngsters from Moodbidri have come forward to form a professional drama troupe to stage Konkani plays around Mangalore, and later even outside Mangalore as per demand.
At the moment there are hardly any professional troupes in the Mangalore drama arena.
Inspired by ace dramatist Pradeep Barboza from Dubai, the troupe has named itself as 'Sangon Mugdana Kalakar'. The troupe was formally inaugurated by Fr Antony Fernandes at the at the Corpus Christ Church Hall, Moodbidri on Sunday October 22.
Fr Edwin Pinto, headmaster of St Thomas High School, Alangar, Valerian Sequeira, Catholic Sabha regional president, Leena Pinto, Catholic Sabha Moodbidri varado president, Br Arun of Moodbidri parish, Andrew D’Souza, director of Sangon Mugdana Kalakar, Edward Barboza, and Deepak D’Silva, Dubai were also present at the inauguration ceremony.
Speaking after the inauguration, Fr Antony Fernandes said, "I am very delighted by the step taken by these youngsters to showcase their talents to the Konkani community."
Valerian Sequeira said during his younger days he had a dream to set up a drama troupe but he couldn’t fulfill his wish. "But I am very happy that our youngsters have come forward to form a drama troupe and I assure my full support to these youngsters," he said.
Drama director Andrew D’Souza said that he was very happy to be chosen as the director of of Sangon Mugdana troupe, as the main person behind this troupe is none other than his own student Pradeep Barboza. He also assured his full support.
"Our young artistes Avil D'Souza, Alwyn Menezes, Alwyn Quadras, Harry Tauro and Wilfred Mendonca will be taking this troupe forward," he said.
To mark its beginning, the troupe will stage its first play 'Ootre Uzwadlem' by Pradeep Barboza very soon. The troupe will also stage this drama in various places around Mangalore.
The main motto of this troupe is 'for Konkani literature, for Konkani people and for Konkani talents'.
Prathap Menezes, Dolphy Aranha, Wilfred Aranha, Gladys Menezes, Rolsan Cardoza and Shiny Pinto will be the actors in the troupe, while Sunil - Harry Alangar will compose the music and William Pinto, Padrengi will provide the lights and sounds.
Avil D'Souza conducted the entire ceremony. Alwyn Menezes introduced all the actors while Alwyn Quadras proposed the vote of thanks
