Assaults on Women Rising in Bengal: Karat

Kolkata, Oct 18 (IANS): Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat Wednesday said that there has been a rise in violence against women in West Bengal.

"There has been an unprecedented rise in attacks on women. The recurrence and the crudeness of the violence have been compounded by the very strange behaviour of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee," Karat said here at a function.

"Earlier, it was a denial that any such thing is happening. But now, she attacks the media saying they have been exaggerating and glorifying incidents of rape," said Karat.

Banerjee has been vociferous in her attacks on a section of media, accusing it of highlighting incidents of rape.

"This shows her short-sightedness and pugnacious approach. Like the rest of India, West Bengal unfortunately has become a place where regular attacks on women take place. On Oct 30, we will start a campaign on the issue, mobilising people and demanding measures to protect the women," added Karat.
