Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (VM)
Mangalore, Oct 17: Last month, the case of Akku and Leela, who had been working for 42 years in Government Women Teachers' Training Institute at Udupi for a meagre salary of Rs 15 a month had evoked much public debate. Despite an order from the Supreme Court, they were not paid their salaries, which had stopped after they approached the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal for justice.
Now, another case similar to Akku and Leela's has emerged.
Elizabeth Tauro is as a sweeper in Government Teacher’s Training school at Balmatta for 43 years, while Padma works at Fisheries Junior College, Malpe, for 42 years, both for a salary of Rs 15 a month.
Going by their ages, both have retired from service and yet continue to serve in the colleges. The duo claims that they have been done injustice for years.
Addressing the media on Tuesday October 16, Dr Ravindranath Shanbagh, president of Human Rights Protection Foundation said that there are around 300 people in Dakshina Kannada who work for meagre wages.
Shanbagh said that the court had ordered the state government to pay Akku and Leela full wages along with interest since 1971, but the government has not taken action even after 32 months of the order.
Even the education minister is aware of the incident but he is not taking action, alleged Shanbagh.
Now that Leela and Akku have won their case, Elizabeth and Padma too have decided to approach higher authorities, he said.
