Beijing, Oct 17 (IANS): China plans to increase protection of the wetlands around Poyang Lake, the country's largest freshwater lake and a major bird habitat.
Over 1.3 million hectares of wetland will come under the project that envisages dredging aqueducts, setting up boundary markers, building patrol trails and weather monitoring facilities.
About 15 million yuan ($2.4 million) will be spent, Xinhua reported.
The Poyang Lake in Jiangxi province is home to migratory birds during winter.
About 95 percent of the world's white cranes, 50 percent of white-naped cranes and 60 percent of swan geese spend their winter here every year.
