Chinese Teen Killed in Ghana Mine Crackdown


Accra, Oct 15 (IANS): A 16-year-old Chinese boy has been killed and over 100 others have been detained by police in Ghana during a crackdown on illegal gold mining.

The operation was launched Thursday and Friday in Ashanti region. The Chinese boy was shot dead when he tried to escape, Xinhua quoted the Chinese embassy as saying Sunday.

China's Ambassador to Ghana Gong Jianzhong met Deputy Foreign Minister Chris Kpodo and demanded thorough probe into the shooting and compensation for the family of the victim.

The government promised to investigate the case, Xinhua reported.
