Mangalore, Oct 13: In a tragic incident, two young boys drowned in a river at Bengre Kasaba here on Saturday October 13.
The deceased have been identified as Marsook (13), son of Ameer, and Hasan Nameer (14), son of Basheer.
Marsook was the youngest among Ameer's four sons and one daughter, while Nameer was the second among Basheer's three sons and one daughter.
Marsook and Nameer
Marsook was an 8th standard student of Government High School, Bengre, while Nameer was studying in 9th standard in Badriya School, Kandak.
As it was Dassara holiday, the two boys along with four other boys had been to the river to swim and play. It is said it was a normal routine with the boys to go swimming on holidays.
But even as they were swimming, Marsook and Nameer were swept away by the water. The other boys called for help. A few youngsters who were playing cricket nearby rushed to their rescue, but could not save the boys.
Locals along with Panambur police and Tannir Bavi divers' team rushed to the spot and began rescue efforts. However, it was too late.
It is said that the two boys were swimming at a spot where dredging has been taking place since a month, and hence the water was deep. However, the boys were not warned about the danger as no one saw them get into the water.
The bodies of the two boys were fished out at around 1.30 pm with the help of fire brigade personnel and kept at Mohiuddin Jumma Masjid in Bengre. A big crowd gathered at the mosque. It is said that due to unavailibility of boat, it took some time for the fire personnel to bring the bodies ashore.
Panambur police have registered a case.
It is said that a few years ago two children had drowned at the same spot, and while the body of one child was recovered, the other one was never found.
