Moscow, Oct 11 (IANS/RIA Novosti): A mushroom picker in Russia's Sverdlovsk region made a hazardous haul when he scooped up 17 hand grenades in a nearby forest.
The man found the grenades in a plastic bag near the Gorbunovo village. He "carefully hid them so no one, particularly children, could find them. Then he brought the arsenal to the police station the next day," the police said Wednesday.
Weapons have frequently been handed in to police in the region as the result of a local police amnesty and "cash for weapons" programme, in which law enforcement agencies pay rewards for weapons turned in, a regional police spokesperson said.
"We are trying to find out now whose illegal stash this was and where these things came from," he added.
