Udupi: People Block National Highway in Protest Over Cauvery Issue

Udupi, Oct 7: The agitating members of District Farmers Association, auto-car drivers and various other associations blocked traffic on national highway near Padubidri for almost 25 minutes on account of the recent Cauvery water issue.

Addressing the protestors, peasant leader Shashidhar Shetty Yellur said that the state has taken a wrong decision by not looking into the matter properly. Even the central and Supreme Court’s decision is not acceptable. Jayalalitha, even after knowing Karnataka’s drought situtaion, has just thought of her state’s well being, and this will never to be accepted by the people of Karnataka, he opined.

The protesters burnt Tamil newspapers and posters of Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha and also shouted slogans against her. A large number of vehicles queued up on the highway which was blocked for nearly 25 minutes.

Peasant leaders, Ashok Poojary, Vijay M Amin, Vinay Shetty Yermal, Prashanth Shetty Inna, Vishwanath Bhat Inna, Rathnakar Kotian, Shobharaj, Prakash Shetty, Vishu Kumar Shetty, Harish Shetty Padebettu, Vishwanath Shetty, Businessman Harish shetty Padubidri were present during the protest.

    Gregory, I am refering to the rivers flowing into the arabian seas, as seen in mangalore, under utilized is hwat it is and thenin March next year we have the ministers saying there is no water to pump to the people. Cauvery is another issue, The KRS dam does not properly irrigate the surrounding areas as not enough canals have been built

    The supporting gesture on the part of Udupi District farmers towards the challenges faced by Mandya farmers is just and timely. Keep united but do not yield to the tune of corrupt politicians who are shedding crocodile tears to grab your votes.
    I think, from the comment above, Alex Bendur has not understood the Cauvery issue correctly. He is mentioning about water being freely flowing to sea. Which sea and which river? According to my knowledge, for past 25 years only once the water of Cauvery has reached Bay of Bengal. In other words River cauvery has never satiated the thirst of Karnataka and Tamilnadu fully ever.

    Instead of protesting regarding water from the cauvery, they should protest why the government does not make enough channels for diverting the rain water, why is there no rain water harvesting in the state. What is the state irrigation Minister doing except saying in January 2012 that the monsoons will be okay, why has she not taken any long term action. This decision is from the supreme court not from any government of the day, they have seen it fit to release the water to Tamil Nadu. Even if this water is not released do you think Karnatake has enough channels to send the water to the drought affected areas. the answer is NO and there is no plan as well in the near future to expand the canals. I was in india during the rainy season and I could see all the river flowing freely into the sea, no artificial sumps are built to at least channel some water for use in the dry season. Anyways, these leader though trying to make a right protest are not protesting over the correct reason. If this be the rule then china can build dams across the Bramhaputra and stop the water there and not allow any water to flow into India
