New Delhi, Oct 7 (IANS): With India accounting for over 10 percent of global deaths in road accidents each year, about 1,000 road safety experts from 30 countries are to in the national capital next month to discuss ways to cut down on such fatalities.
The two-day meet on Road Safety on Urban and Rural Roads, being organised by the India chapter of Geneva-based International Road Federation (IRF), the global body for promoting and advocating safe road developments, will be held Nov 1-2.
"The conference will provide a platform for all stakeholders to have interactions to evolve strategies and action plans to realise improved road safety in urban and rural India," said K.K. Kapila, chairman, IRF.
"Worldwide governments are working on reducing fatal accidents and Europeans countries have been successful, while in developing countries, including India, fatal road accidents are on constant increase. A session will also be devoted to road safety in metro cities, including Delhi, as the maximum number of fatal accidents are taking place in Delhi in the country," he said.
The Ministry of Road Transport, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), FICCI, Indian Roads Congress and the Delhi government are co-organisers of this meet.
According to a World Health Organisation (WHO) report, India accounts for more than 10 percent of global road accident deaths of 1.3 million (13 lakh) a year.
