Bandh over Cauvery: Mangalore Wakes up, Partial Response in Udupi

Mangalore, Oct 6: Though normal life remained largely unaffected by the state-wide bandh called over the Cauvery issue, the city eventually woke up to the bandh with several like-minded associations holding a protest.
Cauvery Horata Samiti along with Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangh, Dakshina Kannada, Kodava Students' Association, and Karnataka Rakshana Vedike rickshaw drivers' unit participated in the protest.
As part of the protest, a rally was held from Jyothi to Hampankatta circle. Meanwhile the police stopped the rally near Hampankatta and arrested the protestors.
Speaking to Daijiworld, S P Changappa, president of Mangalore Bar Association said that the decision of the Supreme Court in the issue was not apt. Hence a discussion should be held on the matter by both the states along with the central government, he added.
Shridar Shetty, working president of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangh, Dakshina Kannada, George PV from Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Jagadish, Dinakar Shetty, legal advisor of all college students union, Arun Kumar, vice president of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Rickshaw unit, Uttam Alva, Pradeep Kumar among others participated in the protest.

Mangalore, Oct 6: The state-wide bandh on Saturday October 6 over the issue of release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu evoked no response in the city. Life went on as usual, and the bandh seemed to have made no impact at all.
Transport, cinemas, petrol bunks and businesses functioned as usual. Schools, colleges and hotels too remained open.
Public transport too was unaffected and buses to various places like Puttur, Dharmasthala, Uppinangady, Udupi, Kundapur and Subramanya plied as usual.
However, due to the general perception that the city may shut down, business was slightly affected.

Udupi, Oct 6: The bandh called over the Cauvery issue received partial response in Udupi.
However, except for sporadic protests, the district was largely unaffected and life went on as usual with educational institutions and businesses remaining open. Public transport including buses too remained normal.
Meanwhile, South Kanara Photographers' Association, Kaup and Udupi zone jointly organized a bike rally and submitted a memorandum to DC.
“Leaders of Karnataka are interested only in fighting for chair whereas the leaders of Tamil Nadu and Kerala are concerned about their people. The farmers and residents in Bangalore are dependent on Cauvery river for irrigation and basic necessities. In the present days of drought it is unscientifical to let water to Tamil Nadu and Kerala," said Vasudev Rao, president of SKPA.
"In the coming days Netravathi river will also be affected in the same manner. All should participate in the protest," he added.
J S Janardhan Kodavoor, Udupi zonal president Sundar Poojary, Kaup zonal president Ravi Kumar were present.
Members of Raitha Sangha and Jaya Karnataka staged a protest in Karavali bypass of NH 66 Udupi by forming human chains and burning tyres.
Raitha Sangha vice-president Vijay Kumar Hegde, district president Janani Diwakar Shetty, district Nagarika Samiti secretary Nityanand Volakad were present.
