Mangalore, Oct 4: Transportation of illicit liquor by trucks, jeeps and private vehicles may be common and likely to be caught. Some people seem to have therefore devised another method - sneeking in illicit liquor through passenger bus.
However, the latest method too has been foiled by the Maryhill excise police.
In a flash operation, three employees of Ganesh Travels bus were arrested for transporting illicit liquor by bus from Goa to Mangalore.
The aressted persons have been identified as bus drivers Ashok and Venkappa, and cleaner Vishwanath.
As many as 40 bottles of illicit liquor were found in the bus.
The liquor bottles and the bus have been confiscated by the police.
It is suspected that more such transportation of illicit liquor by passenger buses may be taking place. Such buses provide a safer option to smugglers as the buses ply on the same route on an everyday basis and hence do not arouse suspicion of the authorities. Also, unlike other vehicles, luggage is not often checked in passenger buses.
Further details on the incident awaited.
