In India, Rapists Walk Free as Victims 'Shamed' into Suicide: Reuters

Source: Reuters

Reuters, one of world's top news agencies, has come out with a disturbing report on the plight of rape victims in India, especially in the more remote parts of the country. Cultural taboos, and a society too ready to judge women, have ensured that the victims suffer in silence while their perpetrators walk free, says the report.

Sep 25: Of course, it’s hard to imagine being raped (and who would want to). But just for a minute try and think about it.

Imagine you are returning home from work, walking down a busy road in early hours of the evening, perhaps from the train station or the bus stop to your home as you usually do.

Suddenly a car pulls up slightly ahead of you and as you walk by, the rear doors open and two men get out. Without any hesitation, they grab you and bundle you into the back seat.

You struggle with all your might and shout and scream, but none of the passing cars stop. No one sees or hears you, or perhaps wants to.

As the car pulls away with you inside, you lash out but you are in the middle between the two men, and they slap and punch your face, rip your clothes and pin you down before forcing themselves on top of you. They are strong and for the first time in your life, you feel truly helpless.

One at time, they rape you mercilessly with their hands over your mouth, in the moving car for what seems like hours on end, before dumping you on the outskirts of the city.

Before driving off, they warn you not to go to the police or tell anyone, adding that they have video clips and photos of the rape on their mobiles which they will disseminate publicly if you go to the police.

In a culture where chastity is expected before marriage, where a woman’s sexual behaviour is how she and her family are judged, where such an incident will “shame” you and bring dishonour on your family, what do you do?

You keep silent at first, but eventually, unable to bear the mental anguish of this horrific experience alone, you kill yourself.

POISON, SELF-IMMOLATION, WRIST SLASHING

This is not a made-up scenario.

It is a reality which unfortunately is being increasingly reported in India’s towns and villages where suicides are often linked to rape with victims emotionally blackmailed or “shamed” into ending their lives.

A quick search under “rape” and “suicide” on maps4aid.com — a website which documents news reports of crimes against women in India — gives an idea of the extent of the problem and the torment that some victims go through.

Young girls and women have drunk poison, set themselves alight or slashedtheir wrists in the aftermath of such sexual violence.

But it’s not just rape victims. Even their families are pained or shamed into killing themselves.

Last week, a poor, lower caste man in the northern state of Haryana committed suicide after he discovered his young daughter had been gang raped by eight upper caste boys in their village and had circulated video clips of the rape.

The man reportedly drank poison out of the shame of his daughter’s reputation being ruined — sparking protests in the village over police inaction with only one arrest so far.

JUDGMENT CULTURE

In India (and other South Asian nations), public knowledge of the rape of a woman is seen as a blot on the victim, which not only scars her emotionally and physically, but most likely determines the course of her life (and often that of her families and her siblings).

This is a deeply conservative and patriarchal region where age-old customs such as payment of hefty dowries at the time of marriage and beliefs linking a female’s sexual behaviour to family honour have made girls seem a burden.

Women here are still judged — not so much on what they say or do, their job or education or views – but whether they have had sex out of wedlock or not and how they dress and behave with other men.

A girl who has engaged in pre-marital sex will often be seen as a disgrace and her family may be shunned in the community. If she has sisters, like her, they will face problems finding a husband to marry them — one of the key issues parents worry about as soon as a daughter is born.

With rape, this twisted judgment persists.

People (which include government officials and police) still judge the victim — often criticising her for her clothes, where she happened to be, the time of day — rather than sympathising with her and supporting her.

As a result, few women are willing to report rape cases due to the lack of support, but more so the shame they face by going public.

In 2011, 24,206 rape cases were reported, according to India’s National Crime Records Bureau – a figure which gender rights activists say is a gross under estimation.

Until society as a whole realises that it is the perpetrators who should be shamed by their horrific deeds, rather than the victims, India’s raped women will continue to suffer … and will needlessly continue to commit suicide.

Just few days back I saw with my own eyes that a woman wearing saree was pillion riding with her husband on bike. Her saree got stuck in the back wheels and she fell down and got hit on her head and died. There are numerous such cases in Bangalore alone. Saree is unsafe even in crowded buses.
Peeping Toms & Touching Jerrys are the biggest nuisance for Saree wearers.

A survey in Mumbai, Delhi & Kolkatta has revealed that Majority of the Indians find that the Saree is the most provocative & sexiest dress among all the dresses of the world next only to Bikini. Because saree reveals the most provocative part of woman's anatomy that is waiste & abdomen. Salwar Kameej is considered as most decent dress for women.
Secondly, all Indian films show that nothing is wrong in eve-teasing and focible kissing of heroine by Hero and ultimately heroine accept it lovingly, which has enouraged perverts for rape. All eve-teasing scenes in films should be banned just like cigarette smoking scenes are banned legally in films.

    Mr. Braganza,

You first create an awareness that the law permits a man, irrespective of his age, marry a girl (let us say of marriageable age = 18). Granted men get inspired by your awareness and offer to marry a girl as old as his grand daughter, get thrashed by women's group and then you rush to their rescue as a sympathizer. What do you expect from DW readers ? Don't you think Abraham Lincoln said that famous quote keeping men like you in mind ?

Consensual sex and then filing a rape case against the male partner began recently after live-in partnership came into practice. Why don't you rather preach 'living together before marriage is bad' instead of waiting for male victims ?

How could you use the same yardstick for rapes on young children (including boys), lone housewives, women walking home after work, widows, sick/handicapped/mentally retarded, female colleagues, domestic servants ? The cases came to the fore are a small fraction against the actual abuses. Victims are mercilessly silenced giving reasons such as family honour and fear of losing a male member to legal sentence.

You are no different than Jetmalani who took up Manu Sharma case ! You defend a torturer despite knowing that what he did is wrong !

Conservative and orthodox thinking from the public is the main cause for all these rapes, sexual harassment , molests etc..
You ( the government ) raid and shut down the clubs, the dance bars ,the so called spa's , you support the groups who attack girls just cause they where found consuming alcohol , or where celebrating a birthday ..
you expect the girls to be in sarees and salwarts all the time , just to show your so called " culture ".. You come up with notices regarding the weirdest and most twisted rules .. You lack planning, you the government as well as police fail in providing security after 10 pm , thus you impose stupid rules that no shops to be open after 11 pm . To just get cup of coffee late night a person has to go all the way to the railway station as a last resort , and then you have pages on facebook " I'm proud to be a Mangalorean" lol... Give me a break ... Instead Make the red light districts and brothels legal , so that they could pay for it rather then rape a innocent girl on the streets .. Or the cops should just give up and stand outside each and every school and colleges and distribute pepper spray , atleast they will defend themselves rather then having a wrong impression that " cops will come and rescue us"..

Indians are addicted to always finding fault with only women since the time of Ramayana & Mahabharatha. Forget for a moment that Puranas are holy books and treat them as just story books and then please analyse the characters of Puranas. There also you will find only Male Chauvinism, and the habit of finding fault with only women even when she is the Victim.

Who ever tells that the western dresses are seductive for Rapists of India, then they should visit Belur, Halebeedu, Ajantha, Ellora, Khajooraho and see for themselves what sort of dresses Indians were originally wearing before the advent of foreign Rulers in 11th Century. Indian men & women were not wearing any cloth above waist except jewellery before 11th century.
Inspite of so Scantily dressed in ancient India, there were hardly any rapes, why ?
Salwar Kameej came to India after 12th century which is originally from Persia & Afganistan which was the dress of both men as well as women in those countries. Saree also came from Greece which was the dress of noble men (not women) of Greece, with pallu or Seragu thrown backside from left shoulder. Alexander's soldiers brought it to India.

Please read a Book written by Mallika Sarabhai about the origin of Today's Indian dresses. Please also keep reading kannada weekly named 'Gauri Lankesh' for such informative articles.

    Mr. Braganza,

Did you not once say that you will marry a teenager though you may be in your sixties just because the law permits it ? - No offense - you have right to speech/opinion. But what you said, depicted the type of person you are.

Terming 'one sided story' for a topic as pathetic as rape, is as as cruel as your thoughts towards women. You can have your own reason to harbour such feelings. We are living in a society made out of our brothers/father and other male members who saved women from rapists. I thank God all are not like you !

No woman asks to be raped and a man who rapes a woman as punishment for any other offence is none less than a monster. There is no doubt that he enjoys delivering this punishment, at the same time, there is no guarantee that he will not carry out that act again not for punishing but for self-entertainment. Therefore, your crocodile tears as discrimination against men is not tolerated as long as 'rape' is applicable.

If a man expects his bride to be a virgin, he too should take up the challenge and be a virgin ! Its chavaunism indeed when he visited brothels and brought home AIDS !

Its also true that every case of women victims have some women behind it , eg: like in laws , relatives . Women issues gets space on almost all international magazines , but the plight of men goes un noticed and never gets heard off. According to a survey last yeare , male suiccides risen considerably, thanx to women patriarchal law like domestic harrasement . Being bread winner of family he has go threw all pain and agony and forced to keep male chivalry aside , otherside he could b nailed anytime . Call it draconian or midieval . Thats the truth. Its not wrong expect a virgin bride , and its not a 'chavaunism '.

There should be only 1 punishment for raping or molesting women i.e. start beheading them. In India almost all grave crimes do happen with the help of police & politicians. Victim gets victimized every time physically and psychologically whenever police or court start their work.

    Dear Ramesh,

Where politicians are having time to bring strict law to this effect, instead they are bussy in estimating what kind of new tax can be impossed on mass public,in which way can lure poor public!! this only they are discussing & keeping in mind during day & night, this is nothing but result of exceeded democracy.

It's a shame on our Indian government who can't even bring a strong punishement against these people, is it because many of the accused are connected to politicians. Why can't we have the same law as the gulf countries have. I am sure with this kind of law women in India will be really secured.
