Rio de Janeiro, Sep 23 (IANS): Former Lyon striker Fred scored his 12th championship goal of the season as Fluminense extended its lead at the top of Brazil's Serie A standings with a 2-1 victory over Nautico.
Fred struck just before half-time with a powerful shot after a pinpoint Thiago Neves cross at Rio's Engenhao Stadium Saturday, reports Xinhua.
Leandro Euzebio had earlier handed the home side a 1-0 lead by prodding into an unguarded net after goalkeeper Gideao ventured off his line following a Deco corner-kick.
Striker Kim gave Nautico hope with an 81st-minute strike but Fluminense held on to move five points clear of Atletico Mineiro in the championship standings.
"We predicted it was going to be a tough game and it proved that way," Fluminense coach Abel Braga said after the match. "Nautico is a difficult team to play because they never give up. That's why the victory has a special feel to it."
In other results Saturday, Palmeiras defeated Figueirense 3-1 away while Santos fell 1-3 at home to Portuguesa with Neymar missing the match through suspension.
