Tbilisi, Sep 21 (IANS/RIA Novosti): The Unicef has condemned the human rights violations against juveniles in Georgia's prisons, after videos were shown on two Georgian TV networks that portrayed prison guards torturing inmates.
The Unicef expressed concern particularly over the alleged maltreatment of juveniles in the Avchala correctional facility.
It has called on the Georgian government to investigate the situation and to ensure the security of those detained as well as those who witnessed the violence.
The Georgian interior ministry reported the abuse of prisoners, in which a group of guards tortured inmates while filming the acts on video, in Tbilisi's Gldani No.8 prison.
The ministry released parts of the video, but two TV channels - Maestro and Channel 9 - aired the full version of the shocking video, sparking public anger and protests.
The Prosecutor's Office announced the arrest of 10 employees, while the Georgian Minister of Corrections, Probation and Legal Assistance, Khatuna Kalmakhelidze, resigned Wednesday over the scandal.
The video sparked two days of protests in Tbilisi and other Georgian cities just two weeks before the country's Oct 1 parliamentary elections.
