Beijing, Sep 19 (IANS): Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, who has appeared in public after a fortnight's disappearance, Wednesday met US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta here.

Xi reviewed his visit to the US in February and Panetta's meetings and talks with other Chinese leaders in Beijing Tuesday, reported Xinhua.

Xi, also vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, said Panetta's visit will help to further advance the relationship between the two militaries as well as the two nations.

Panetta said he appreciates Xi's all-round support to enhancement of the military-to-military relations and that he has confidence in better dialogue and communication between the two countries.

Panetta arrived in Beijing Monday evening, kicking off his first visit to China as Pentagon chief. China is the second leg of his week-long Asia-Pacific visit.

Xi had not been seen in public since Sep 1. He re-emerged Sep 15.

During his absence, there was considerable speculation following the cancellation of a number of meetings with high-profile foreign dignitaries.

Xi's meeting with US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton was suddenly cancelled Sep 5.

No official reasons were also given for the cancellation of other appointments, including a meeting with Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
