Protest Against Anti-Islam Film Turns Violent in Kabul

Kabul, Sep 17 (IANS): A demonstration Monday against an anti-Islam movie made in the US turned violent with clashes between police and protesters in eastern part of the Afghan capital Kabul, Xinhua said.

A police official said the demonstration was peaceful in the beginning, but the demonstrators later set on fire several vehicles and damaged several shops besides attacking police with stones.

Additional police personnel were deployed to stop the demonstrators from trying to break through the barricades on the road leading to US embassy and several Afghan ministries.

A thick black smoke rose in the area.

The controversial film allegedly insulted Prophet Mohammed.

Similar demonstrations broke out in several Afghan cities Friday to condemn the film and the protestors urged the Afghan government to sever ties with the US.
