Goa Mining: Parrikar to Recover 'Looted' Amount

Panaji, Sep 14 (IBNS): After suspending licenses of all working mines in the state, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said he will initiate steps on recovering Rs 35,000 crores, which have been lost due to massive illegal mining since over a decade.

Speaking to reporters late Thursday evening, Parrikar said he will issue show cause notices to all mines owners seeking explanation as to why action should not be initiated against them for illegally carrying out the trade.

Parrikar’s statement comes following severe criticisms by the environmentalists and social activists who alleged that suspending operations of 90 mines was an eye-wash.

Justice Shah Commission’s report on Goa's illegal mining pointed out illegality and irregularities worth Rs 35,000 crores, which is likely to go up as inquiry progresses.

One of several recommendations included recovering the looted amount from the mine owners. To this, Parrikar said the 'loot' should be proved for initiating legal action.

Meanwhile, Parrikar today morning held a meeting of all stakeholders of mining to mitigate problems arising due to the shutdown of the mines. Goa Minerals Ore Exporters Association President Shivanand Salgaonkar said the minister has allowed exporting iron ore lying at the jetties and ports.

“We hope the chief minister solves the problem soon,” he told reporters.

Parrikar will meet other stakeholders including barge owners association, truck owners association, exporters, mine owners and the banks, Friday evening.
