Krul, Fer withdraw from Dutch Squad for World Cup Qualifier

The Hague, Sep 10 (IANS): Leroy Fer and Tim Krul will not travel to Budapest with the Dutch team for the 2014 World Cup qualifying match against Hungary Tuesday, the Dutch football association KNVB announced.

Goalkeeper Krul injured his left elbow during training in Katwijk Saturday. Last Friday against Turkey the goalkeeper of Newcastle United was surprisingly preferred over Maarten Stekelenburg, who was the first choice under Bert van Marwijk over the last four years, by coach Louis van Gaal, reports Xinhua.

Jeroen Zoet was selected as a replacement. The 21-year-old goalkeeper of RKC Waalwijk makes his debut in the Dutch squad.

Fer already left the Dutch camp Saturday because of a knee injury, which he suffered in the match against Turkey.

The midfielder of FC Twente will be out for two to six weeks. Adam Maher of AZ Alkmaar has been called as his replacement.

The Netherlands won its first 2014 World Cup qualification match against Turkey 2-0 Friday. They will meet Hungary in their second encounter Tuesday.
