New Delhi, Sept 2 (IBNS): Violence broke out on late Sunday between locals and police in East Delhi after a person was said to have been killed due to police action.
More than half a dozen vehicles, including a bus, and a police booth were torched by the mob in Mayur Vihar Phase-III in the rioting that started at around 7:30 pm.
Both locals and policemen suffered injuries after police lobbed tear gas shells and used force to disperse the crowd.
The clashes broke out nearly an hour after a man, who was drunk, according to the police, fell from his two wheeler at a vehicle checking picket when he was signalled to stop for not wearing a helmet.
Witnesses said the man fell off the two-wheeler as he tried to flee after ignoring a signal and the police tried to stop him. He was then hit by a vehicle coming from behind.
Even though police claimed the man was alive and was undergoing treatment in a hospital, a rumour spread that that the person had died.
Enraged locals gathered near the police picket and clashed with cops before going on a rampage and setting afire the post and at least seven vehicles including trucks and buses.
Six people have been detained by the police, media reports said.
