28 'Punished' for China Building Collapse

Beijing, Aug 27 (IANS): A total of 28 people were found responsible for a building collapse that killed six people in China last year, and have been "punished", officials said.

Seven others were injured when the building under construction in south China's Shanwei city partly collapsed in November, burying a total of 13 people, Xinhua reported.

The building was being built as a training centre for a bank, and the collapse occurred from the fourth to the ninth storey.

Several government officials were given punishments ranging from disciplinary warnings to recording a serious demerit.

According to an investigation on the collapse, defects in the design and construction of the support system of the building were to blame.

The collapse caused an economic loss of 10 million yuan ($1.6 million).
