US Military Chief Visits Afghanistan


Kabul, Aug 20 (IANS): Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Monday paid an unannounced visit to Afghanistan, Xinhua reported.

Dempsey arrived at the Bagram air base, north of Afghan capital Kabul, in the early hours of Monday, according to the Tolo TV channel.

He is expected to meet NATO and Afghan military officials including the top US commander in the county, Gen. John R. Allen.

Dempsey's visit comes a day after a man wearing an Afghan National Police uniform opened fire at US forces, killing one American soldier in the southern province of Kandahar.

At east 29 such attacks have taken place this year, killing 40 US and NATO soldiers.
