Sonia Gandhi to visit Assam on Aug 13


Guwahati, August 11 (IBNS): Congress president Sonia Gandhi will visit to Assam on August 13, official sources said on Saturday.

A source of the Assam Pradesh Committee said that Gandhi, chairman of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition, and Union Home minister Sushil Kumar Shindhe will visit the strife-torn BTAD on August 13.

“Along with Union Home minister Sonia Gandhi will arrive at the Gopinath Bordoiloi International airport, Borjhar and will fly to BTAD by helicopter,” sources said.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and other top officials of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee will also visit the BTAD area on the same day.

At least 77 people have been killed and 50 others including 14 security personnel injured during the ethnic clashes in BTAD in last 20 days.

Meanwhile Assam CM Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said that, around 1,60,000 people have already left for their homes from relief camps.

“The overall situation has bee n brought under control. 101 relief camps had already closed down,” Assam CM said.

Addressing a press conference held in Guwahati, Gogoi said that, 99 police pickets had established in various vulnerable areas in BTAD.
