Meghalaya Rebels Turn Culture Cops, Threaten Police Spies

Shillong, Jul 23 (IANS): A separatist rebel group in Meghalaya has threatened to take stern action against women wearing provocative dresses and impose extreme punishment on people who had become police spies.

The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a rebel group fighting for a sovereign Hynniewtrep homeland in eastern part of Meghalaya, Sunday also warned people in flesh trade and owners of hotels against such practices.

"The HNLC appealed to females to stop wearing provocative dresses and asked them to wear clothes which are decent," HNLC spokesman Sainkupar Nongtraw said in the outfit's mouthpiece, The Voice of The Hynniewtrep.

The rebel outfit also warned the youths of the entire Hynniewtrep, irrespective of sex, who are involved in partying, drinking, creating nuisance in public and spoiling what it called the "traditional and social image" of the ethnic group.

The HNLC ordered all bar owners and party organisers to stop all illegal activities that take place in the guise of social gatherings.

"All liquor bars should stop selling liquor or else the outfit will take stern action against them," Nongtraw said.

Warning people involved in flesh trade and owners of hotels who are involved in such practices, the HNLC spokesman said: "If found guilty, the outfit would take stern action against them. We appeal to the parents of children to keep track of their children and their activities."

The HNLC, which runs hit-and-run operations from its hideout in Bangladesh, threatened to impose extreme punishment, including "death penalty", on people who had become police spies.

Stating that the outfit would take all these issues seriously to create a good social atmosphere in Hynniewtrep, the Nongtraw said: "People underestimating the warnings of the council and violating its diktat will be firmly dealt with. Our cadres are present everywhere in Hynniewtrep and would keep track of all the illegal activities that are spoiling the roots of our culture."
