Mangalore: Honking Menace: Now Report Erring Buses to Police Instantly

Mangalore, Jul 20: Following complaints over noisy bus horns in the city, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has decided to display telephone numbers of the city traffic police station on the buses, in order to enable the public inform the police immediately.

This was decided after a combined discussion with transport authorities and various representatives at the RTO on Friday July 20. By this move, the RTO will look after to larger public participation to tackle the menace.

It may be recalled that on July 1, Daijiworld had carried a special report on the noise pollution and the nuisance created by indiscriminate honking by vehicles, especially buses that fit pressure horns. Following the report, police commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh directed the RTO officials to check such vehicles and take action against them.

In addition, discussions on computerized method for issuing tickets, fixed rate of rickshaw fares even in rural areas, improper bus stands, and allocation of seats for senior citizens, disabled, and for women were also part of the debate.

"Though there are fixed rickshaw fares in the city, in rural areas the rickshaw drivers demand fares according to their whims and fancies," alleged Bala Subhramanya, a resident of Ujire.

Mohammed Nasir alleged that the buses plying from BC Road and Mudipu have a system wherein commuters are asked to get down from the bus and catch another one. He said that this method creates problems for senior citizens, women, and children. Replying to the query, RTO Mallikarjuna assured of taking measures to solve the problem.

Jayaram Shet of city transport owners’ association, Raja Varma of Canara bus owners’ association, Addor Nagarika Samithi members, and other representatives were present at the meet.

    This should be applicable to all vehicles owners such as busses,cars, trucks etc. This is the way we can reduce vehicles overtaking and causing danger to others life. secondly everyone should follow lane decepline, also should fix speed limits in the city. Fine heavily those who do not follow the rules.

    It is good of the RTO to stop this honking menace. It has been too much. Sometimes when I call from overseas to my cousin and he is in the bus, I can hardly hear him except the loud honking noise of the bus both inside and outside. I hope this will work out.

    I am surprised to note that the RTO has announced that the Traffic Police Station number will be displayed on the buses. Is it so difficult for them to give to the press (all languages) the email addresses, the mobile numbers, the telephone numbers and other communication means for reporting such breaches of the law.
    Just asking the public to report is just no good, the public must have a feedback of what action has been taken by the RTO so that they know they have not "wasted theeir time".
    Knowing the reputation that the bus lobby has it appears the worry of well intentioned people is that once the calling number is known to the bus owners the person concerned will be harassed/ threatened.
    Anonimity is the keyword if effective removal of this noise menace is to be achieved.

    Get hold of the family members of the drivers/owners of buses, make them stand in front of the buses and horn continuously till their eardrums get torn off..!!

    The buses stop at the middle of the road even when there is a bus stand in place. Specially at balmatta opp Wine gate. Can the cops take action on this & of course the autos are parked @the bus stop.

    This should be applicable to all commercial as well as private vehicles. Penalty should be substantial enough or else drivers shall just ignore the rules. More importantly RTO should introduce mandatory effective educational program for driving discipline before they issue license.

    I always pity the city bus drivers, it is one of the hardest jobs to drive in congested cities, definitely they have shorter life span due to heavy exposure to pollution, they are victim themselves of the noise pollution, that's why they lose patience and always hyper tensed. most of them become alcoholics. there should be a drivers association to conduct free medical checkups and training and rehabilitation for them. then go for the fine for honking ponking.

    City buses stop to pick up passengers at PVS and other Circles, causing inconvience to other vehicles.

    Apart for buses, the car and other vehicles press horns unnecessarily.

    Beasant - Canara College junction has become dangerous due to inefficient traffic control.

    Please take necessary action.

    The Police cameras already in place. they are watching the buses pass by right under their nose. I am sure the cameras have microphones too. They can book the culprits with proof of sound and video.

    I hope this menace of honking unnecessarily will stopped. It is deafening and highly irritating especially for apartment owners in Bendur near St Agnes where I live. Every bus and other vehicles too keep honking thus disturbing us all. The foreigners in our country are shocked to hear our horns. Please take the necessary action RTO.

    2 big problems faced by people and vehicle owners is the speed in which buses/express buses and lorries travel. other is the harsh horns. its just unbearable . now that from dec speed governors will be used in buses n lorries problems will be solved to some extent. even with concrete and neat roads in mangalore the buses travel at rocket speed theres no discipline. hope from dec our city will be peaceful and organised for civilised driving. RTO please work on this

    LIKE THIS HORN MUST REQUIRED OTHERWISE ACCIDENTS CHANCES ARE MORE. NO NEED TO BLAME RTO, POLICE.

    CENTRAL TEAM SHOULD ORDER TO CHANGE INDIAN ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE, THEY SHOULD WIDEN ALL ROADS, THEN ONLY WE CAN AVOID HORN CASES.

    I AM SURE HAVING THIS CENTRAL TEAM WE CAN'T EXPECT ANYTHING. VERY BAD.

    Giving order is simple.But every thing is how it is implemented. Few days before same RTO Mr Mallikarjun & Mr.Seemanth Kumar gave same joint statement regarding Loud Horn .But not even a Single bus owner have bothered about. I appreciate only when all bus owner will obey the order.

    The RTO must follow up on the promises, hopefully as unlke in the past. My requests to place notices in the bus that 'spitting was a crime' was accepted as also that conductors must ensure that reserved seats for 'special people' and 'Sr citz' are made available when required. Music inside buses to be curbed strictly.Thanks!-ijss.

    Sir I request you to publish the number on Daijiworld where we can directly call and complaint regarding the air horns. Kindly ensure heavy fine/cancellation of license is done. Unless heavy fine of Rs 10,000 or more is not levied, they would get away without removing the horns. We want the number to be also published on Mangalore Page of Facebook and also the new City Traffic Police page. Life is hell because of these horns, cant live peacefully in Mangalore.

    We support this initiative whole heartedly.Thus far we felt that the police were hand in gloves with the bus owners and so no action could be taken against them. We laud this initiative. As it is it is against the law to use the horn in the vicinity of places of worship, schools and hospitals. Knowing Mangalore this means there is no place one can use the horn. Please be tough not just on buses, but cars and the bikes with altered silencers (especially Royal Enfield Bullets). DK Police, more power to you. Jai Ho

    We tulu nadu people must fight against real issues such as corruption, bad policies etc and not unnecessary issues such as honking panking. How is the govt going to control honking? one who does not have work keeps doing something. thats what this says. Honking, laughing, shouting etc. Its like kids complaining to their teachers.
