Puttur, Jul 17: The students of Ramakunjeshwar College continued their demand to be allowed to wear headscarf on Monday July 16 with a silent protest.
Reacting to the protest of Muslim students, Vasanth Rao, principal of the College said that vested interests and external forces are provoking the students against the college. "They have been sowing the seed of communal disharmony in the campus," he added.
He requested the parents to send their children back to classes so that their future is not affected.
"In a bid to bring about uniformity in the campus, the management has decided to adopt dress code and this has to be followed by all. In the name of religion, separate rules cannot be implemented, because then, communal harmony cannot be maintained, he opined.
In addition, the issue has been brought to the notice of Pejawar Swamiji, president of the college administration who has asked the management to come out with some solution, taking into consideration everybody's opinion.
The principal asked the students withdraw the protest and to attend the internal exams which begin on July 25.
Speaking to the media, a second year student of BCom said that they have been asking the management to approve headscarves in the classes. "For four days we have been boycotting classes but as we are less in number, our pleas are not heard," she said.
"We have decided to have a silent protest. The protest will go on until the college heeds to our demand," she asserted.
As the internal exams are approaching, she requested the management through the media to find a solution at the earliest. "The district administration and vice chancellor should also look into the matter," she added.
The members of Muslim central committee along with the students and their parents will discuss the issue in Athoor and DK district college administrative committee is likely to discuss the issue in Vivekananda College, Puttur, sources said.
