BJP to Discuss Vice Presidential Poll

New Delhi, Jul 14 (IANS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will meet Saturday evening to discuss the Aug 7 vice presidential poll amid lack of consensus in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over the issue.

The meeting will be held at party president Nitin Gadkari's residence here, said informed sources.

The main opposition party, which wants to field its candidate for the post of vice president, will discuss the likely names with its allies but no date has been fixed for the NDA meet.

The names of BJP leaders Jaswant Singh and Murli Manohar Joshi have been making the rounds as probable candidates.

But BJP ally Janata Dal-United (JD-U) may support Vice President Hamid Ansari, the frontrunner as the vice presidential nominee of the ruling United Progressive Alliance.

But JD-U chief and NDA convenor Sharad Yadav said the alliance will take a decision only after the UPA discloses its card.

"Let the UPA decide, we (NDA) will meet after that," he told reporters.

JD-U and another NDA ally Shiv Sena broke ranks with the BJP to support UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee for the July 19 presidential poll.
