Mangalore: Jawa Bikes Vroom at Annual Rally in City

Mangalore, Jul 9: Every second sunday of July is celebrated as International Jawa Day across the globe. A rally of these heavy steel, vintage Jawa motor bikes was organized by the ‘Mangalore Jawa-Yezdi Motorcycle Club’ to commemorate the 10th International Jawa Day at Balmatta here on Sunday July 8.
 
The rally was flagged off from YMPU ground, Balmatta. As many as 32 Jawa bikes along with four Willys jeeps participated in the rally that was spread across the city.















































 

Speaking to Daijiworld, Shaun Fernandes (member of the club) said that the International Jawa day is celebrated worldwide and the club has been organizing the rally in Mangalore since 2007. While only three enthusiasts participated in the rally in the first year, the number increased to 15 the next year.
 
Jawa Colt, Jawa Jet, Jawa Classic, Roadking and many others were part of the rally, out of which Jawa Colt was said to be the oldest model dating back to 1960.
 
Jawa is a motorcycle manufacturer based in the Czech Republic, which was formerly known as Czechoslovakia. Yezdi that was released in India almost five decades ago still has fans all over the country.
 
Jawa motorcycles have always had a glorious standard in the two-wheeler scenario in the country. Mangalore youth have always attached a sense of prestige to riding these vintage bikes. Participants and owners of the bikes will always remain to loyal to the Yezdi slogan ‘The Forever Bike, Forever Value’, said a participant.

    I would tend to agree with Mr. Kamal here that there's nothing very great about these bikes, as compared to vehicles from the 30's 40's & 50s! But with all due respect, have you tried taking a vehicle from that era, a company that long time back shut down their shutters with no authorised workshops around, on round interstate trips or maybe to the Himalayas? Or let's say, how many of those vehicles can you round up in running condition to lap around the city without breaking down?
    And considering that most of these bikes are prized possessions of pretty senior gentlemen - day-to-day common men like mechanics, technicians, welders, shop keepers, etc. unlike the rare vehicles of the 30's & 40's that are usually owned by the rich privileged few, they are in quite a well kept condition! Should we deny them that one day when they can proudly come out with their machines, to be a part of the ownership club who understands what a real bike feels like, unlike the numerous plastic bikes so freely available now?
    And for those who are concerned with pollution, - yes so are we. Most of us keep our bikes well within the norms of pollution control. And it is on that one day in a year when the public will see the smoke that collectively comes out. What about the pollution we all create outside our houses, throwing and burning plastic randomly without bothering about the effects? What about the noise and smoke levels from our commercial traffic - Diesel LCVs and HCVs that pollutes our lungs day and night? And we just might have forgotten the smoke from our industries that we see daily.
    So let's just give these riders a rest - anyways instead of asking what's the point of this and that, maybe its easier to try and understand first!

    Trust me, too much smoke and air pollution. There is nothing so rare or great about these bikes. Vintage rally of Cars and bikes of 30s, 40s and 50s are a great and rare site.

    Nice to see these old Jawa bikes. All wearing helmet is also a good sign, but the kind of environment pollution created by this rally is not good!

    Any ways, looks good and congratulations to all the proud owners of one time pride, JAWA.

    I too am a proud owner of Yezdi Classic. The bike originally belonged to my Dad. I would love to be a part of this club.

    Hi,

    Congratulations to the Jawa Club and all the best to its members to keep this club up and going.

    I was not aware of the Jawa history viz.: "Jawa is a motorcycle manufacturer based in the Czech Republic, which was formerly known as Czechoslovakia."

    Thank you Daiji for coming out with this informative coverage.

    I remember Jawa during my earlier days and then the dawn of Yezdi with Roger Binny the star cricketer being awarded the FIRST Yezdi that rolled out from the Mysore factory I guess.

    In today's scenes of Harley Davidson etc. good to know of these die hard Jawa fans.

    Also read in the papers that Vespa is coming back in India, sure many would remember this scooter which guess was phased out a few years ago.

    I am having 1949 Java... registerd on my Dads name... not sure how to get it re register and use it on the roads. as per the RTA any vehicle older than 15 yrs cannot be registered... need help how to make this vehicle back on road
