Bangalore: Minority Status only if 75% Admission Given to Minorities

Bangalore, Jul 6: Minority status will henceforth be granted to educational institutions in Karnataka only if the institution concerned provides admission to 75 per cent of students from a notified minority community.

This decision at a meeting of the State Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda on Friday.

Enrolment of 75 per cent of students belonging to the notified minority community to obtain minority tag to educational institution has been made mandatory in order to ensure that the educational institutions followed the Right to Education Act, according to Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri.

Briefing reporters after the State Cabinet meeting, he said an order on granting minority tag to institutions would be issued to educational institutions concerned to follow admission of students under the Right to Education Act.

As the admission process has been completed in educational institutions this year, the RTE would be implemented in schools from the next academic year, Kageri said.

    With all due respets to you, I think it is the other way round in reality.Meaning, the institutions run by the minority, are for the rich/intelligent /majority are playing tricks to get as much grants/money from the Govt as possibe (Be it the BJP or Congress).

    Many minority children are not given admission in the schools run by the minority. It is the right time for minorities to fight for justice with the schools run with minority tag.

    Oo! Ok! Let us agree State Govt. is totally wrong.But what is your alternate deifnition of a 'minority institution'? How to control those black sheeps, who make money from rich people, with the tag of a 'minority institution' and deny the admissions to the under previlaged poor students from their own community?

    State Government should clarify this 75% requirement for minority schools for acquiring that status. But when the status itself is of minority, it is expected that State Government means 75% of their respective community population in the District where the School is situated.

    I endorse views of Fr.Ambrose Pinto.Supreme Court's verdict should be prevailed upon. A minority Institution cannot have 75% students,where they stand less than 3% in population. It is un-necesary for the Government to interfere just to please someone.

    How ignorant are our politicians! Against the same govt a few years back the Supreme Court of India had ruled that numbers is not the criteria to grant Minority Status to an institution.Present day Politicians are often ignorant about the constitutions and the provisions enshrined in it for the Minorities. The present govt in Karnataka cannot stand the word "Minority" that is why all this tamasha about the need to have 75%. For example when Christians form just 2% of our countires population how can you expect the instituion to have 75% from their community. This decision will be struck down by the courts of the land which are the guardians of the Constitution of India.

    This news item is confusing- does it mean that Christian educational institutions must have a minimum of 75pct Christians for them to get benefits under the RTE Act.Would they also be allowed to take in students of other minorities to fulfill this tag.
    Well I think it will need a change in thinking for all concerned. What happens if there are less students from this community- will the Govt (politicians) then put in "their students" to fill up the class.
    Let all minority educational institutions put on their thinking caps & go in for "quality rather than quantity"- you get my drift.

    this is really a good move. So far many minority institutions minting money by admitting rich students. These institutions have done enough money already. They never served minorities. They served their own cause. Why minority institutions should gain benefit in the name of minority, if they are not admitting minorities?

    This is ridiculous...!! If you are able to find 75% students how can you be a minority. Theoretically, If it is a small linguistic or religious minority group like the Sikhs who want to start an institution in Karnataka, they have to find 75% Sikhs? This manipulation is done by this BJP government to hit at the minorities... This is the true colour of this party...!!
    But since it is unconstitutional, if this law is challenged in court they will have to repeal it... This is not the first time it is done by this party... It is being done time and again just to harass the minorities.

    This is a rediculous decision of the cabinet. Minorities cannot be a majority in a minority institution given their percentage of population. The courts have alreday mentioned to obtain minority status there is no need to have majority of students. How can christian institutions get 75% christian students when their percentage of population is a mere 2.1%? Besides minority certificates are also issued by the National Commission for Minorities. The states have to accept them. However there is need to challenge the decision of the state cabinet by complaining to the National Minorities Commission.

    Since the supreme court has exempted the minority schools from RTE, BJP govert playing a trick to suppress the Minority schools.This is a condemnation of supreme court verdict and also against the constitutional rights of minorities. So we have to fight for justice.
