Mangalore: 21-year-old Student Ends Life on Railway Tracks

Mangalore, Jul 6: In a tragic incident, a 21-year-old youngster allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving train here on Thursday July 5.

The deceased has been identified as Renol Miranda, son of Wilfred Miranda and a student of St Joseph's Engineering College.

It is said that depression over failing in his fourth semester led him to end his life. He had lost his mother at an early age and his sister is working in Bangalore. His father remarried. Sources said that was in a depressed state for almost week.

As per the complaint filed with the police, he left home for college on Thursday at 7.30 am. Between 8 and 9 am he committed suicide at the railway track in Suterpet. However, the news of the tragic incident broke out only in the evening.

Renol reportedly sent SMS to all his friends before taking the extreme step, but it gave no clear indication that he was going to end his life, as he told them 'see you soon'. 

Though he was depressed, his friends say he was an enthusiastic and fun-loving person. He was also a member of a music band as a guest guitarist/singer.

Mangalore railway police have registered a case.

    In the case of youngsters/students, the community/society feels that "DISTINCTION IN EXAMS = GOOD BOY/GOOD GIRL/GOOD CHARACTER"!!! In today's day and age, it sickens me that educated people act illiterate and make such comments. I think you people need to be enlightened of what life is really about. Beyond books, marks or any such worldly things. Renol was one of the best, most intelligent human beings I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Why was he not measured by that standard? Because as a society, you all don't think that it is a measure of success! If he was judged by THAT STANDARD, he would have bagged a GOLD MEDAL repeatedly! You all must take a page from his book, and be better human beings, rather than making uneducated guesses of his sensibility, education or his spirituality.
    As a community we have ignored many an individual suffering from an illness of the mind. To add to it, we have even gone to the extent of talking of them in a very derogatory way. Do the society a favor, and first educate yourselves that problems of the mind are as important as a physical illness. It is this derogatory attitude, and lack of awareness AND LACK OF ACCEPTANCE of this humble and loving boy, that led him to give up his life.

    A lot of these comments make me sick. Renol was clearly "suffering" from clinical depression (please google it if you do not know what that means). His awesome and ever cheerful personality was dysfunctional at the time of him doing this. Please just treat this as an illness and not something he did intentionally because knowing Renol he couldn't care less about failing an exam.

    In saying this, yes, had any of us noticed or taken the trouble of finding out why he was behaving rather strange and recluse-like and had done something about it - he would have been with us today.

    Suicide attempts from clinical depression is 100% preventable provided someone does something about it. It's all too late now. He is gone - done and dusted. Unfortunate incidents like this (instead of being butchered further) should be used to create awareness and de-stigmatize mental health/ psychiatry in India so that people do not take these things for granted, that they know what symptoms of a serious mental illness comprise of, and how it can be moderated by seeing a psychiatrist and undergoing the appropriate treatment.

    very sad to hear the news. Pray Almighty, Renol's soul to rest in Peace in eternally. I fail to understand how come Renol took such a sad step when our community is close knit, where we have small christian communities in each parish, who visit members and share each others joys and troubles. One more thing I would like to point out is it is high time our clergy and eminent leaders try to understand what is making people stay away from Church especially in Mumbai, the Youth are always msising the sermons are such that we hear the same quotes repeated again and again from bible. I feel there interaction is lacking the only interaction is prayer groups where people spend endless time praying in each rather than doing social work for community. Abroad it is worst, since foreigners are leaving the Church and becoming Athesist. It is high time our Clery all over the World thinks about Christians first b4 appeasing other communities where we get only hatred in return. Otherwise Christianlity which is only 2% in India, will become 2% all over the World and may be lesser.

As a community we can help these people by seeking early medical or spritual help if we identify such cases early. Also for youngsters who go through problems of depression to speak to someone whom they trust and confides so that timely counsel might help to overcome the problems of depression.

    I am deeply saddened by the death of Renol. As a teacher and mother my heart bleeds for the loss of this precious life. Many a time as a teacher i have come across students who are not attentive, disruptive in class and totally lost. On gaining their confidence , many a time i have noticed that they have their own problems about studies, self, parents or friends. I often refer them to the school Councillor for help. Teachers and parents must recognize that youngsters also suffer from depression. Parents must leave the door open for discussion. If your children is unable to communicate with you then there is definitely something wrong in the way you are parenting.The right values must be taught to children from a young age. God's presence and his infinite understanding must be taught to youngsters, so that in time of need PRAYER will be their source of strength. Parents should not be strict so much so your child fears you, rather we must come down to the level of the child and see his point of view...let us not begin our lectures with " I my days......you people now-a-days have it easy." Youngsters have their own struggles and problems which are increased by the media, friends, technology, money ideas about success etc. RIP Renol.

    Renol was well loved by one and all.
    The various comments on facebook indicate his beautiful persona, his smile his cheerfulness , in a nutshell how amazing he was as a human being.
    Let us not judge,criticize,discourage or indulge in blame games.
    We must provide our children with the proper tools they may require in times of distress.
    Helplines ,counseling centres are available all over the city.
    My sincere request is that these be put up at various learning institutions.,
    so that we can avert another sad tragedy.

    at the comments...iam sorry bt dont interpret what renol did accdng to what each of u thnk i knew renol for more tahn 3 years and it hurts when those who hav no idea what hes gone through and faced are talking this way..what he did wasnt wise..but maybe it was the best for him...its not only about marks thats what we think we know there could have been other things too... iam sure if a nice and cheerful person like renol had the guts to do what he did something was terribly wrong somewhere but what hurts that he never told us i wish he did we love him more than he could imagine...but iam sure he's happy there with his mum she'l take good care of him...and for the rest of us he will take care ...
    its sad to see how people imagine and tell things to others once a person is dead...only cuz the dead person cant defend himself.. its always better to just sympathies than get to know and make stories...with no offence i think i respect him and always will ...

    Looking at Renol's pictures on facebook, he looks to be a cheerful kid. My heart goes towards his parents, Sister and his numerous friends. Life in not about what marks you score or percentage you get in your exams. At one point in your carrier your employer will not even bother to know from which university have you passed, unless it is a cream of institutions like IIT'S or IIM's. Youngsters need to understand that what matters the most is how well you can perform & how smart you are in facing the trials and tribulations in your daily life. Sadly our education system is more theory oriented rather than being pratical....

    Heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family. I remember seeing Renol last during his mother's funeral they were living in our neighbourhood then.

    I would like to highlight a few of my observations here.

    A friend of Renol's father who claims that he had objected to his second marriage went to the extent of pointing an accusing finger at him in this forum. Couldn't he do it in private when the dust had settled.

    It is said that Renol had 1057 friends on facebook. Youngsters should note that it is not the number but it's the quality that counts. I did't mean to say that one should not have friends. But if you have not made GOD as one of them it is as good as you are having none. Believe in yourself and believe in God, only this will help you overcome the trials and tribulations in life.

    Youngsters, learn to share not only the joys of your friends, but their sorrows too for when a dark cloud appears in their lives they can confide in you their feelings and find solace.

    I just read a couple of comments ...most of them are trying to investigate the case... i think we shall leave it to the right people to do that.. but what we need to look at is what we can learn from this incident..just so that the death of Renol has not gone a waste... just as we are sitting and commenting we could be having children in our own home going through depression... as parents we do need to make time to understand them and be with them emotional .. not just financially... am sure for Renol its been a long journey of depression before he could take this hasty step... for some of us this might seem a silly reason to die...we need to involve our kids in those areas which they are interested in and dont impose our likes on them... just that somebody elses son is a doctor or engineer even our son should be the same or rather bigger.... i hope am making sense here.... at last we need to pray for renol's soul.... make be receive eternal peace..

    No words of comfort can bring dear Renol Miranda back.
    Let us respect the way he lived his life and the way he chose to end it.
    We were never in his shoes to understand the real events in his life that made him soar or floored him.
    We just got to see his exterior, a smiling face, and from most of his friends comments a joking aura that surrounded him that made everyone around him happy.

    I lost my mother when I was 8years old and my little sister 4days for her first birthday. Our step mother was an angel who took care of us 8children as her own.She is no more but she left behind memories that a step mpther is a mother too.     N.Frank, you have said it very correctly. I do feel the same. But today Religious heads do not have time for those things because they are busy with builders and contractors where there is cash box. There were few Catholic schools and colleges with Catholic students were Majority. Then started the greed for money and with that started P.U colleges in every parish(almost). This is not with love of youngsters but Donation. Part of donation ended up in luxury vehicles and foreign education for nephews and nieces. And few Houses here and there with property and Condos with pools. With all these commitments where will they find time for troubled youngsters besides there is no money in this trade.

    Children and followed by parents. Children watch and try to convince their parents a lot . Many cases parents who loved so much initially and then leave them a side, it will affect the life of young children. All the parents must understand their grown up children.     I wish Renol had to meet a consoling soul before he had taken this drastic step.
    There have been cases of this kind reported quite often and the need of the hour is to have a qualified counselor in every institute. Person with depression longs for support, love and care and when he does not get this he considers his world empty. Having more counseling cells and making their existence known to students and others is a must. When our youth face this challenging world and reach at the cross roads of their lives, not knowing which directions to take, what solutions to adapt, finding no solution, solace or guidance from anybody around surely they end up in depression.     At the time of posting this comment there were 379 No of people who AGREED with Nagesh Nayak, Bangalore. This only shows that we become one when there is a genuine concern.
    However, in this case, we should not blame the step mother as Renol was depressed because of his failure in the fourth semester. A step mother is a human being and she has her limitations. Only exception being Yasoda, the step mother of Lord Krishna. But then every step mother does not get a step son like Lord Krishna.
    May God give strength to the bereaved family.

    The comments from Mr. francis lewis, Sastan / Bangalore could have conveyed directly, since he knows his father personally. The article/comments shows that the boy was lonely since his father was re-married, which could be true, but that alone can not be the reason. I know some so called 'complete families' where the children are neglected by parents. Children from loving families commit suicide for various reasons. The father too must have been gone through loneliness hence he went ahead with a second marriage. It wont be fair to make this as the sole reason for boy's act.

    Very sad news indeed.
    Rest in peace Renol.
    People commit suicide when they think that they have too many problems which they cannot handle.
    Among young ones,the cause of suicide may be due to a broken love affair, failure in exams, excessive teasing by colleagues / friends,bad treatment at home and school/college etc.
    There are tell-tale signs which can be noted on a potential suicide victim. Sleeplessness, loss of appetite, staying aloof etc.
    At their times of trouble,the parents role is very important. Love and care is the magic cure.
    Unfortunately, Ronal was lonely since his mother is no more, Father is re married and his only sibling - sister is away at work.
    Loneliness is a killer.
    There are some helplines for those who feel depressed and think of committing suicide.
    I request Daijiworld to post these phone numbers on their web site.
    Rakesh Shetty and Nagesh Nayak have posted very sensible comments this time.I feel they two are the same person!

    We live in a society where having a college degree is more important than identifying and harnessing our talents. It is a need of the hour for parents and teachers to realize that just a degree will never help in anyone’s job hunt or career growth. In India around 15% to 20% graduates are unemployed. But, most of world’s successful people never went to college like Bryan Adams (singer), Ben Affleck (actor), Dhirubhai Ambani (billionair – business man), Bill Gates (co founder of Microsoft), William Shakespear (writer), M.S.Dhoni (Indian cricket captain & 16th most remarkable athlete in the world) etc. etc. People give examples of these legends to their kids. I am not saying people should not be educated, but, don’t expect each student to be a rank holder. May be we could have had a great musician/ singer in the form of Ronal, if someone had told him – “failing in studies doesn’t make someone a failure in life. Pursue something you love the most.” Our education system and society should concentrate on creating more good human beings, because we have many graduates, Masters and Phd holders and very less good people.

    May Renol's soul rest in peace.While i was doing my B.E in Hassan Malnad College in1984,there were so many students in our college who were doing engg since 8-10 years[usually 4 years].They were failing in some subjects in some semesters usually by not studying or low attendance,or noted by some professors for mischief in campus during strikes,or while smoking,drinking,taking drugs etc.But they used to take all exams even if they did'nt prepare for exams during 2-3 days gap. All of them completed the BE by 1989 with our batch and now they are working with good jobs in foreign countries ,L&T,BDA B'LORE like Catha ,Rampa,Ramesh,Lackii.Some are big architects in M'lore like Sanath[sks group],Peter paul twin brothers[Architechnics],Nelson,Dungston[Design Syndicate].There was no scope for any deppression here and this encouraged us to complete our studies.Also sometimes ,unluckily we got question paper which is out of our sylabus [like M-Tech,IIT-JEE]and only 1 or 2 students out of 50 luckily could pass.I have seen some taking engg drawing exams for 2-3 years.I have seen some of our lecturers just giving full internal marks and attendance without giving a single lectur in the entire semester.Usually those who really prepare and score good internal marks usually don't fail.All that students should keep in mind is that we are students of our life....nothing else.All the best engg guys.

    What a sad and tragic destiny of a young man who chose to end his life during the prime stage of his youth.

    Nearly sixty percent of India's population is below the age of 30 years. The youth of today is confronted with so many new challenges. They need so much of mentoring and comforting in their daily program of life. The school situation is tough, the home situation is tough, the job situation is tough, and the overall economy is tough for everbody everywhere.

    This is just the result of the hectic curriculum & cut throat competition going on in the colleges. Students who are left behind in all this suffer the most.. but guys thats not the end of life..     What a sad incident and a waste of precious life..Just cannot imagine the anguish and grief the parents might be undergoing.. From my personal experience..... Failing in exams is not an end of the road...Failure comes only to those people who can dare to take up challenges..As far as my understanding is concerned majority of the people who were back benchers and below average in their academics are now working for prestigious companies. The reason being they never took failure as the end but took it up as a challenge.As an Ex Student this great institute , my personal advice to the SJEC college management is that counselling unit has to be present who can help out people in such situation and i request that this has to be taken on a serious note. Engineering colleges have become pressure cookers... Covering more than 16 subjects in a year is not a joke. My request to all the students is to help out people in such a situation by giving them mental and emotional support. Dear parents, generally speaking don't force your children into something that they don't want to be into. Engineering is become a fashion today. People do engineering to either get a degree or get into some IT companies where they are trained to work like machines. This is the result. Loss of young lives. We find similar cases in IT companies also. Mental pressure is the main reason behind it.There are lot of other courses which present promising career and future. Youngsters can even opt them. Engineering is not the only future.

A person who lacks optimism , perseverance in difficult times drag themselves to suiccide thoughts. Family and parents got nothing to do with this , as even a person with good family support also committ suiccide. There should be efficient distress emergency number , peaple should be made aware just dial the number in case of any suiccide thoughts. Couple of days of counselling and yoga sessions they vl b back to normal life.

    From his name it appears, Renol Miranda to be a Catholic, studying in a catholic college.

    His parish leadership, the college management should re view his case as to why there was a failure in not being of help to Renol, when he was suffering from depression.

    To all youngsters.....certain things are not in our control, like...mothers death, fathers re marriage, sister or brother going away for work...as in this case...but studies are in our hands..which we can do and has to be done by ourselves...and going into depression can be avoided by doing certain things which give us happiness and concentrate on studies...If you fail in one or two subjects it is not the end of the world...you can always come back to track. It is normal certain youngsters lose interest in studies at some point of time because of over enjoyment or problems in the family. But do not resort to suicide but try to come back to studies and it is not impossible...!!!! Please do not commit suicide. Life is is always beautiful after a bit of struggle like studying and overcoming the family problems..

    Nagesh raised appropriate points but youth should understand that after certain age i.e. 16 years probably they are matured.     VERY VERY SAD NEWS.

    SUICIDE BY YOUNGSTERS ARE COMMON PHENOMENA DUE TO SOCIAL & FAMILY DISTURBANCE.

    IN THIS CASE IT IS CLEAR THAT RENOL MIRANDA TOOK HIS DECISION DUE TO FAMILY PROBLEMS LIKE :

    1. HE LOST HIS MOTHER @ EARLY AGE.

    2. HIS SISTER IS NOT WITH HIM & WORKING IN BANGALORE.

    3. FATHER REMARRIED & STEP MOTHER LOVE IS NOT AS REAL MOTHER.

    THERE IS NO ONE IN HIS HOUSE TO GUIDE HIM PROPERLY DURING DEPRESSION.

    IF HIS MOTHER ALIVE HE WOULD NOT HAVE DO THIS.

    THERE IS NO ALTERNATIVE FOR MOTHERS LOVE TOWARDS CHILDRENS.

    NEED OF THE HOUR IN THE SOCIETY:

    INTERACT MORE & MORE WITH YOUNGSTERS & GIVE THEM MORAL SUPPORT DURING DEPRESSION.

    YOUNGSTERS ARE VULNERABLE TO ANYTHING IF NOT GUIDED PROPERLY.
