Air India Pilots to Call off 58-day Strike

New Delhi, Jul 3 (IANS): Air India's striking pilots Tuesday assured the Delhi High Court that they would call off their 58-day agitation immediately.

Appearing for the pilots, senior advocate Geeta Luthra told Justice Reva Khetrapal that the pilots would immediately call off the strike and join their respective duties within 48 hours.

The striking pilots will have to give joining reports and terminated pilots will have to give "willingness to join duty" report to the Air India management within 48 hours.

The pilots' decision to end the strike came after the Air India management assured the court that it would "sympathetically" consider their grievances.

"The Air India management shall sympathetically consider the grievances of pilots, including the aspects of reinstatement of those pilots whose service has been terminated consequent to this strike," the judge said.

"Serious effort has been made by this court to settle the dispute. Counsel for both the parties have assured this court that they will be extending full corporation in this regard to their respective client," Justice Khetrapal said while disposing of the plea of the striking pilots.

The court also told the pilots and Air India management to appear before the concilliation officer, Chief Labour Commissioner N.K. Prasad, on July 5 at 4.30 p.m.

The court posted the matter for July 9 to submit the report by concilliation officer.

Air India pilots owing allegiance to the Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) have been on strike for nearly two months. On Monday, they moved the court saying that the members were ready to resume their services if Air India adopted a more humane nature and was ready to discuss their grievances.

About 440 pilots struck work May 7 against the Air India management's move to train pilots from the erstwhile Indian Airlines in the merged entity on the soon-to-be-inducted Boeing-787 Dreamliner. Air India and Indian Airlines merged into a single entity in 2007.

In all the 58 days, we have never seen any comment in support of the pilots action. This shows the anger, the travelling public have for this lot. We must complement the government for their firm stand and now hope that they will not reinstate the trouble makers. It was always a tall claim that they will find jobs elesewhere. Let them try!

So now the pilots want to refrain from their strike? After so much of loses? more than the financial loses the huge loss is the the goodwill Air India have lost. Hardly anyone would be interested in booking ticket on Air India cause we are not sure if we will fly on scheduled date. AIR INDIA LOST EVERY THING AND WE INDIANS HAVE LOST OUR NATIONAL CARRIER.

Apparently “IPG” followed Team Anna’s way of fasting which is almost 100% sure opposed by UPA. Had they followed Manmohan way of life, they would have been called by super women for negotiation. Anyhow, poor Pilots lost their salary for two months and now they left with huge credit card bill which is payable within couple of days else Bank will start charging interest on outstanding amount. In fact Air India lost less when their flights were not operational due to savings in aviation fuel. Well done Ajith Singhji, you are really singhhh (Lion) unlike other Singhjis in UPA Government

No one is ready to take the scrap from the pilots, not the minister, not the govt nor the passengers. Pilots started getting the pinch of the hunger, nagging from their wives and they are made to wash dishes and clothes at home.. no freedom at all. All these made them to unconditionally end the strike and join duty..... Dont take the sacked pilots back....let them suffer for a while now..

Who will bear the loss that has incurred due to the strike?
The Tax payers will face the brunt of the strike, cancellations and the loss?? Every 11th day there is a strike and there is a truce! how long will this go on and how long the public has to bear? i hope someone takes serious steps not to repeat these incident and cause trouble to the public! Strict notices has to be issued to the pilots. Dont they read the appointment letter when they join? if there is a dispute let them go to court individually. Or just leave and go for better airline if they get.Why do they have to harras the public. I think this time the Govt was tough but not tough enough!
