Poet Gulzar to Deliver Talk on Poetry in Mangalore

Mangalore, Jul 2: Kavita Trust which works for the promotion of Konkani poetry will be organizing the first-ever James and Shobha Mendonca, Endowment Lecture on Poetry on Sunday July 8 at the Conference Hall, SDM College of Business Management, Mangalore at 4 pm.
Renowned poet, script writer and film director, Gulzar will be delivering the lecture and later, will answer questions from the audience during the interaction session. He is going to speak in Hindi and English as per the organisers.
Kavita Trust, which was established in the year 2002, is a registered trust since 2007. The Trust since its inception has taken up number of projects to achieve its objectives. Spreading its wings throughout the Konkani region, it has brought different dialects of Konkani under one fold and has been the platform for poetic expression. It has taken the art of poetry recital to the doorstep of the lay man by way of poetry sessions, seminars, talks, poetry festival, competitions and symposiums. Kavita Trust publishes books on poetry and runs its own website, kavitaa.com in Konkani for the past 10 years. Melvyn Rodrigues, Sahitya Akademi awardee for the year 2011 is its president. Kishoo Barkur, Averyl Rodrigues, Andrew L D'Cunha, William Pais and Victor Mathias are its member trustees.
In the six years of existence Kavita Trust has held around 64 workshops. These workshops have helped many poets and poetry lovers to study and understand the nuances of poetry. From this year James and Shobha Mendonca Endowment lecture on poetry will be annual feature and one of the important programmes of the Trust.
Gulzar
A man of many facets - poet, film maker, lyricist, writer - Gulzar was born on August 18, 1934 in Deena, Jhelum, (now in Pakistan). He spent his school days in Delhi and then came to Bombay, to a celebrated career in the film and literary world.
The poet in him has flourished simultaneously with the film maker and writer. Sensitive and contemporary, he was closely associated with the Progressive Writers Movement. He has published various collections of poems and short stories. The screenplay of ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (TV series) has been published as ‘Ghalib – a scenario’ in 2005. He has also written sixteen books for children that have been published and translated into various other Indian languages.
He has scripted for over fifty films, notable among them being ‘Anand’, ‘Guddi’, ‘Bawarchi’, ‘Namak Haram’, ‘Khamoshi’, ‘Andaaz’, ‘Gharonda’ and ‘New Delhi Times’. Besides scripting, he has also directed some of the most memorable films of Indian Cinema – ‘Mere Apne’, ‘Aandhi’, ‘Mausam’, ‘Khushboo’, ‘Achanak’, ‘Kinara’, ‘Meera’, ‘Parichay’, ‘Angoor’, ‘Ijaazat’, ‘Libaas’, ‘Lekin’, ‘Maachis’ and ‘Hu Tu Tu’.
Along with the respect and adulation of his audience and readers, he has also been the recipient of many popular film awards like the Screen and Filmfare awards. He has also been honoured with the prestigious National Award, seven times.
He received the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for ‘Dhuaan’ (Urdu short stories) in 2003. 2004 saw him being honoured with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in India and he was awarded the Academy Award for Best Original Song, ‘Jai Ho’ (Slumdog Millionaire) in 2009.
Art Exhibition by Wilson JP D’Souza
Gulzar will inaugurate the first -ever solo art exhibition titled 'Rendezvous with feminine' by Mangalore’s upcoming artist Wilson JP D’Souza on the same day at 10:30 am at the Orchid Art Gallery, Hemavathi Building, Balmatta, Mangalore. Giselle Mehta, author of 'Blossom Showers' and former bureaucrat will be the chief guest on the occasion.
James and Shobha Mendonca
James Mendonca has been residing in Dubai for the last 32 years and been an entrepreneur for the last 23 years. He completed his high school at Padua High School, Mangalore, BSc at St Aloysius College, Mangalore and BE (civil) from Malnad College of Engineering in Hassan. He established M/s Reliable Fabricators LLC in 1988 in Dubai and other successful enterprises which have given employment to over 700 people.
He served as a founder member and later as president of Mangalore Konkans, a non profit charitable organization. He was instrumental in starting Kanara Entrepreneurs Ltd established with the objective to support, nurture and encourage budding entrepreneurs.
Shobha spent her childhood in Bendur, Mangalore. She is a graduate from St Agnes College with a degree in commerce. While at school, Shobha took up table tennis, and under her captaincy, St Agnes College won the prestigious Mysore University Sports Championship in 1981. Subsequently she represented and captained Mysore University in the inter-varsity tournaments as well as Karnataka in the National Sports Festival for Women and emerged runners-up. Shobha also represented the Karnataka in the inter-state and national table tennis championships in 1981-82. She was the undisputed ladies table tennis champion from 1983 to 2001 in Dubai.
In 1999 Shobha took over the management of Middle East Factory L.L.C. with the encouragement of her husband, James Mendonca. The company specializes in structural, non-structural, architectural & decorative steel works and has over a 150 employees. Its clients are spread over the U.A.E. and the Middle East.
Shobha is currently the president of the Dubai Chapter of Kanara Entrepreneurs Limited or KEL.
