Mangalore, Jul 1: In yet another case of suspected suicide, a woman jumped into a well along with her three-year-old daughter at Hosakaveri near Kinnigoli here on Sunday July 1. Though the woman died, the daughter had a miraculous escape.
The deceased has been identified as 28-year-old Padmini, daughter of Pushpa, and resident of Mogaveerapatna that comes under the limits of Ullal town panchayat.
Padmini was married to Chandrahas Shettigar, a resident of Hosakaveri. Chandrahas was employed in Mumbai earlier but he opened a flower stall in Haleangady a year ago.
Chandrahas and Padmini have a three-year-old daughter Shivani who attends nursery school. Chandrahas and his family were living along with his brother-in-law Mohan and his wife Geeta.
On Sunday morning, Chandrahas left for his flower stall as usual. Padmini was in the habit of getting up late every morning, hence, the family did not suspect anything amiss when she did not come out of her room on the morning of the incident.
Later, when Geeta went to fetch water at the well, she saw that the rope was let loose into it. To her utter shock, she found Padmini and her daughter Shivani inside the well, and raised an alarm. The workers in a nearby construction site rushed to her help and brought out both Padmini and Shivani. However, Padmini had already breathed her last and Shivani, who was clutching on to the rope, survived.
Padmini's alleged her in-laws of torturing her. The neighbours informed that Chandrahas and his family were isolated and living without any contact with the locals.
Mulky police registered a case in this regard.
