Udupi: Crime - Debit Card Hacked, Man Fleeced of Rs 1.6 Lac

Udupi, Jun 29: A man lost Rs 1.6 lac from his bank account after his debit card details were hacked and used by a stranger. The incident was reported on Thursday June 28 from Hejamady.
Praveen Gadiyar is an account holder in ICICI Bank in Udupi, and has an international debit card. Though he still has his card, money from his account was used for transactions at a mall by an unknown person, reportedly by hacking his card and number.
Praveen, a civil engineer works for a construction company in Dubai. He came to India on June 20 on vacation. On June 27, he withdrew an amount of Rs 5,000 from his account in Corporation Bank, Padubidri.
On June 28, Praveen received a message on his mobile phone that transactions worth rs 1.6 lac had been done on his debit card. As he still had his original card, he suspected that the culprit might have used a fake debit card with his details.
Praveen rushed to meet the branch manager of Udupi and explained the situation. In Praveen's bank account statement, it was revealed that the debit card was used in a mall to purchase six various items worth Rs 1.6 lac. The bank authorities immediately blocked the debit card from further use.
In addition, the bank authorities advised Praveen Gadiyar to register an FIR in the police station and submit a photocopy to the bank. However, even though Praveen Gadiyar approached Udupi town police station and Padubidri police staion, his efforts went in vain.
Being a cyber crime, the police asked him to register the case in the city where the transactions took place. Moreover, as there the police station for cyber crimes is only in Bangalore, Praveen Gadiyar has decided to approach Udupi commissioner for help.
