Udupi: Crime - Debit Card Hacked, Man Fleeced of Rs 1.6 Lac

Udupi, Jun 29: A man lost Rs 1.6 lac from his bank account after his debit card details were hacked and used by a stranger. The incident was reported on Thursday June 28 from Hejamady.

Praveen Gadiyar is an account holder in ICICI Bank in Udupi, and has an international debit card. Though he still has his card, money from his account was used for transactions at a mall by an unknown person, reportedly by hacking his card and number.

Praveen, a civil engineer works for a construction company in Dubai. He came to India on June 20 on vacation. On June 27, he withdrew an amount of Rs 5,000 from his account in Corporation Bank, Padubidri.

On June 28, Praveen received a message on his mobile phone that transactions worth rs 1.6 lac had been done on his debit card. As he still had his original card, he suspected that the culprit might have used a fake debit card with his details.

Praveen rushed to meet the branch manager of Udupi and explained the situation. In Praveen's bank account statement, it was revealed that the debit card was used in a mall to purchase six various items worth Rs 1.6 lac. The bank authorities immediately blocked the debit card from further use.

In addition, the bank authorities advised Praveen Gadiyar to register an FIR in the police station and submit a photocopy to the bank. However, even though Praveen Gadiyar approached Udupi town police station and Padubidri police staion, his efforts went in vain.

Being a cyber crime, the police asked him to register the case in the city where the transactions took place. Moreover, as there the police station for cyber crimes is only in Bangalore, Praveen Gadiyar has decided to approach Udupi commissioner for help.

    It is better to follow advise of Ashok, Mangalore!! Every Mall now a days has CCTV. If police willing.. we can see the picture of looter! Some one will identify him and would be nabbed shortly! End of the story!! We do not need BJP or Congress here! We need dedicated type of police of that dept who is paid for such job!! They are trained to give result for their salary! Thats how system should work! Political partys dirtry involvement is an obstacle at times!

    Debit cards or credit cards or plastic money cards must not be given or placed in customer service bill folder especially in the hotel bill payments. The hotel waiter gets the bill in a folder and most of the customers place their cards in that bill folder to pay the restaurant bill. There are professional waiters who are involved with this racket, they have small hand held devices that can be used to retract data from your card just by swiping the card. They get all the data and information from the card and can produce a duplicate card which they will use for their purchases. The card owners must never give their cards to any person to swipe for payment. Cards must be swiped personally.

    The easiest and the first step all card issuing companies can take is to issue cards with the holder's photo.RBI can direct all card issuers to introduce this feature forthwith . Merchant establishments can be asked to refuse cards that do not have photo of card holder and if they accept it,it shall be at their own risk.

    Similar incident took place in my company: The customer left his wallet by mistake in his car and the service engineer got it while servicing the car. It had the credit card and the engineer waited for a day. As the customer did not return to claim, he went to the shopping mall and bought costly electronic items costing a large amount using the credit card. When the customer got the SMS of the usage the credit card, he got suspicious and rushed back to the service dept where he parked his car. The service engineer denied any usage of credit card. Then the customer went to the bank and police station and lodged the complaint. Police got into action, identified the machine where the card was swiped and also viewed the footage of the CCTV of that particular hour where the engineer was spotted very clearly. The engineer was given severe punishment by putting in jail and then deportation to Kerala.

    But in India for this kind of crime, will the culprit get severe punishment????

    Praveen Gadiyar is to be blamed, why does he have a debit card in the first place, it is always recommended to withdraw cash from the bank cash counter directly rather than a debit card or ATM card which is unsafe

    Dear HENRY MISQUITH, BAHRAIN dont blame BJP Govt for silly issues .I remember the story of a Agasa( Washerman ) who used to say everyday Crocodile came Crocodile came .Many times Villagers went to help him out but found no crocodile .Then all the Villagers formed an opinion this washerman is lying .And one fine day real crocodile came washerman shouted loudly ' hey Crocodile has come save me ' Nobody came because they thought this washerman is lying .Hence please dont harp BJP BJP for everything .Come here in Mumbai so many such thefts take place should I blame Congress Govt ?

    I am sure someone who know praveen very well has noted his debit card number. may be at some restaurent or may be in movie hall. Pls be careful when opening your wallet, do not keep debit,credit,atm card in visible mode.Rather you can keep driving licence,voters card for visibility in your wallet.
    Very sad in praveens case. Hope the hacker will be caught soon.

    Same is happened to me last year, I had corporation bank credit card and from my card Rupees 80,000 shopping was done in Unites States. I was shocked when i saw the sms in my mobile, contacted Corporation bank manager, credit card Managers but no action taken yet still I am receiving the statements.

    Very sad to hear the story .Mr Gadiyar if he goes to Bengaluru to lodge compmaint they might say this happened in Udupi go to Udupi Police station .This might be due to Card cloning .I think Card cloning cases may not be Cybercrime.Internet Transfer alone is Cybercrime.Debit card cloned by the Malls sales staff is most likely because all 4 transactions took place in that Mall only .
