Bantwal: Two Labourers Washed Away by Flash Floods at Vented Dam

Bantwal, Jun 28: Two labourers engaged in work on the vented dam at Kesottu in the limits of Pilimogaru here were washed away by flash floods caused by incessant rains. The incident took place on Thursday June 28 afternoon.
The deceased have been identified as 42-year-old Sumati Shetty, wife of Ashok Shetty and resident of Paledamara, and 30-year-old Shekar Poojary, resident of Keldody Mijaru.
Shekar Poojary's body has been retrieved while search is under way to locate Sumati Shetty.
Nine labourers including Shekar and Sumati were engaged in works at the under-construction vented dam at Kesottu, in Pilimogaru. The labourers had been filling soil on either side of the dam for the past two days. On Thursday, when Sumati was crossing the dam, the water flowed with a sudden force taking her along. Shekar Poojary tried to rescue Sumati, and in the process both were drowned.
Shekar's body was found about one kilometer away from the dam.
With the water level rising, search operations to locate Sumati were postponed to Friday June 29 early morning, informed Bantwal rural sub-inspector Mahesh Prasad.
Shekar Poojary is survived by two-year-old son, and his wife who is in the seventh month of pregnancy.
Tahsildar Anand Nayak, MLA B Ramanath Rai, Chennaittody gram panchayat president Navinchandra Shetty, ZP member Nalini Shetty, TP member Ramesh Kudtumeru, Bantwal Land Bank chairman Sudarshan Jain, Bantwal rural police visited the spot.
