Beltangady, Jun 26: Despite warnings after warnings and cases after cases, people seem to be still falling prey to bogus lotteries and trusting strangers with their life-savings. In the hope of becoming crorepathis, they end up as roadpathis, and what is worse, their example does not seem to be a lesson to other gullible ones.
In yet another incident, a man from Shimoga blindly believed a bogus SMS that told him he had won a crore, and ended up losing a whopping Rs 51 lac!
Not only did he lose the money, but also his house which he sold to become rich and four acres of land. He even borrowed additional Rs 32 lac from his friends, all for the sake of a crore which never came!
It all started when he got an SMS that claimed he had won a crore in ICC cricket lottery. Believing it to be true and not caring to check twice, he contacted the numbers mentioned in the SMS and did as he was told. For a whole year, he went on depositing lacs of money as and when he was told, only to realize when it was too late that he had been duped.
A diploma engineer employed in a well-known company, he was reduced to a pauper in no time. Now he has no house and no property, and is being dogged constantly by his money lenders.
Having lost everything, he decided to seek divine help and visited Dharmasthala on Monday June 25 night. He appealed to Dharmadhikari Dr Veerendra Heggade and narrated his misery, especially his outstanding debt of Rs 32 lac which was giving him sleepless nights.
But as they say, what's done cannot be undone. All it can do is serve as a lesson to others and be a warning against fake lotteries.
