Mangalore, Jun 25: Extending support to the nationwide bandh called by Indian Medical Association on June 25 to protest the Centre's decisions on National Council for Human Resources in Health (NCHRH) Bill, Bachelor of Rural Health Care (BRHC) course and Clinical Establishment Act, the local unit of IMA staged a protest at IMA house, Attavar Road here on Monday June 25.
Addressing the gathering, Dr K Jayaprakash Shetty said that the move of the central health ministry to initiate NCHRH Bill will result in taking away the autonomous power of the medical and paramedical councils. The protestors also decried the implementation of Clinical Establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act.
Dr K Mohandas Bhandary, vice-president of IMA Karnataka said that granting of autonomous power to any democratic institutions results in good quality service, a fact which holds good in the case of medical education and health services also.
"If the autonomous power is revoked now, it may cause decline in the quality of medical service across the nation," he said.
Members of the Mangalore unit of IMA shut down their clinics (except emergency services) and took part in the protest.
A copy of the memorandum addressed to the governor was submitted to the DC.
Dr Satheesh K Bhandary, Dr Annayya Kulal, Dr Siddarth M Shetty, Dr K Bhasker Shetty among others were present.

Mangalore/Bangalore, Jun 25: Doctors across the nation will go on a day-long strike on Monday June 25, causing some inconvenience to the patients. In Karnataka alone, around 6,000 doctors are expected to take part in the strike.
The doctors are protesting against the Clinical Establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010 and the National Commission for Human Resources for Health (NCHRH) Bill, 2011. The recently passed bill targets dissolution of Indian Medical Association and other related bodies, and replacing them with a national human resources commission.
But doctors in Mangalore and Bangalore have assured the public that they need not panic as all emergency services will be available.
The president of State Doctors' Association Dr Ravindra speaking to daijiworld assured that emergency services in all government hospitals and medical colleges will be available for the public, so there is no cause for anxiety.
The Karnataka Chemists and Druggists' Association also assured uninterrupted service as it will not take part in the strike.
IMA-affiliated private and government doctors are taking part in the nationwide strike.
