Fast from Sunday: Air India Pilots to Go the Anna Way

Fast from Sunday: Air India Pilots to Go the Anna Way

New Delhi, Jun 23 (IANS): After 47 days of strike that caused Air India a revenue loss of about Rs.520 crore, the pilots would now emulate Anna Hazare to fight injustice and pursue their demand by going on a fast from Sunday.

"We have received the mandatory clearances for going on a hunger strike. Eight members of our union will sit on fast from Sunday at Jantar Mantar here," Rohit Kapahi, committee member of Indian Pilots' Guild (IPG), told IANS.

"We along with our families will be there to support our colleagues. We want this strike to end, as soon as possible, but we will not come back to work till our 101 sacked colleagues are reinstated," he said.

The Air India management earlier sacked the pilots belonging to the IPG, which struck work May 8 against the management move to train pilots from the erstwhile Indian Airlines in the merged entity on the soon-to-be-inducted Boeing-787 Dreamliner.

The pilots' announcement on their "Anna-type" protest fast assumes significance as this will be one of the first instances in the country where highly paid professionals such as pilots would sit on a hunger strike.

"Our colleagues who are going on the hunger strike will be led by Captain Aditya Singh Dhillon who is a senior commander. We will also provide our pay slips and show the world that we earn as per the industry norms and that no astronomical pays are given to us," Kapahi said.

On June 6, Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh told the pilots that while the government was ready to pore over their demands, the pilots would have to first call off the "illegal strike". At the same time, the airline has also started the process of hiring new pilots.

"We are not waiting for them for ever. We earlier asked them (pilots) to come back and said that no one will be victimised. We had even given a chance to sacked pilots that they can also come back and we will take them back on a case-to-case basis," the minister earlier told IANS.

"I have told them my stand, now they need to think," Ajit Singh said.

The airline on its part has issued advertisements on its website for hiring new pilots for a contract of five years.

The advertisements called for both commanders and co-pilots, who can operate Boeing 777s, 747s and 737s. The applicants will have to go through an interview and flight simulator tests in Mumbai.

The hiring process would end July 23. Air India expects to hire nearly 100 pilots who, along with 90 more trainee pilots, meet the shortfall in the manpower.

However, experts say that it will take Air India nearly four-five months to get the trainee pilots trained as well as give orientation to the new joinees.

The airline's fleet of Boeing's ultra-long haul aircraft is being operated by executive pilots, who have complained of stress and fatigue. The executive pilots are not linked to the on-going agitation.

Currently, the airline is operating only 38 of its original 45 services. Among the seven axed international destinations are Hong Kong, Osaka, Seoul and Toronto.

Can any one say who is entertaining the complaints of Air India Express re schedule/cancellation of flights. Dubai Air India office is not bothered to take any telephone calls. While rescheduling on internet(for cancelled flights)in one place it says that there is no extra fares involved, but on the other hand it asks for the credit card information with extra amount, which must be entered before we re scedule the flight. why we should bear extra fare when cancellation is occured because AIE faults. these pilots will never get any sympathy from the public. Their salary and perks are quite high.they have misused their position on a number of occassions. They are silent looters of national economy. I know a incident where a captain delayed the flight for fictitious reason and it was delayed for two days. The purpose was that the captain liked a particular stewardess and he wished
to celebrate it in the hotel at that particular station.

Air India is a public enterprise, if employees are unsatisfied, they are free to resign and move on... Many are here in India and abroad, who would like to join. If Anna & Team couldnt move move the entire govt, what can loss making pilots of Air India do to shake AJit singh and his ministry.,First make India proud, with your flying, only then people of India will support or else ask only your family for help and support.

Keep it up pilots, you all should really go on hunger strike, do not bend, India has got a lot of money till now we have lost only 520 crores. The hunger strike will reduce some of the fat which has accumlated around your butts, so do not hesitate. I am with the govt, I will also pray to god that all the striking pilot's to go on hunger strike. You people are so hard working that one day when I was flying from B'Bay to Doha left the aircraft and ran away, we had to wait for 6 to 8 hrs in the flight without a clue, then we were booked to a hotel and next day we had to fly.I would like to pat your backs.God bless you all.

I hope the Govt, does not heed to the pilots demands so the pilots fast and die. These overpaid, over weighted, individuals & their organization is a liability to the nation, They enjoy the benefits & the perks on the tax payers money, They are not compassionate to the general flying public & are least bothered. Let the sell of AI to some private enterprise who would run it more efficiently. By the way this would be a blessing in disguise , so I request the cabin crew ‘aunts’ to join the hunger strike so at least they lose some weight and get rid of their tyres & love handles & be more presentable

Otherwise how a Govt can be so indefferent over the issue for such a long time?! I feel some heavy suitcases have been passed to political heavyweights to put the Airline into deep trouble. Regarding the Salary . Air India Should Pay the Salary As Soon As possible . But the Other Reason for Strike It Shouldn't be Done . Why this Dont Happen in Private Airlines ? Because the Employees Fear they May Loose there Job ! Sack All the Pilots Who Are on Strike . Hire New Pilots with Contract Written . Joining Any Strike Action will be Taken . The pilots may have their genuine demands but putting the public to inconvenience and adding loss to their air carrier should not be tolerated. The public generally does not support any strke which the pilots should note. Why 8 pilots, even if all the pilots go on fasting, it is too late to get any sympathy from the public. Forget your ego, withdraw the stike and come back to work and then request to take back the dismissed pilots. By withdrawing the stike, you will not be the losers but winners and you can win back the support of the people.

These Gloried drivers of our National carrier have time and again held the passengers and country hostage by their strikes. More often than not the Government (for obvious reasons) have caved in to their demands. After the Pilots strike, we will have the ground staff striking, never ending saga. Privatization of Air India is the only option, but if privatised, but will never be done, 'cause our netha's and babu's will stand to lose, for some the perks of free travel, and for others looting eg., by way of catering contracts, spare parts purchases, commission's etc. etc. (Sale of Centaur Hotel in Bombay raked in Millions for a concerned few - another long story where prime property of Air India was sold below par. Government should be in the business of Governance not running a Airline, that has for most part been in the red. Take a leaf from the way Jet Airways and a few other private carriers across the globe have conducted their affairs despite the depressing global scenario.

GOVT need not yield to striker's demand unless with out pre- condition, pilots must resume their duties.

But finally people like us who travel at least once or twice in a year for vacation will have to bear the outcome. Same time we fail to understand that Air India lost Rs 500 Crores due to Strike but when did Air India gained when it was in full operational? They always said Air India lost heavily because of high fuel charges and taxes only. So when it is not in operational it should gain at least from fuel and tax charges. According to me, it should make less loss when it is not in operational

In our country after politicians, it is the media which rules the roost? If the media thinks that the pilots are genuine, they will present them so and if not they will present them otherwise! But when will we Indians learn to tax our unused brains, look around and see, India is the only country among the developing countries, where everything under the govt's flag is sub standard. How many of us really would visit a govt hospital or prefer to send our children to a govt school. All these places are owned by govt, so the govt can continue its abuse and loot. Crudely put all these organisations are like devdasis of the yore! Air India is dying and there is nothing anyone would offer to do, least give it a decent death

THESE PEOPLE COULD HAVE PROTEST IN FRONT OF JANAPAT ROAD AND AJITH SING HOME. THEN THEY MAY BE WAKE UP AND LISTEN YOUR PROBLEM.

OR ELSE THESE PILOTS SHOULD GO FOR JAIL BARO PROTEST AGAINST THIS.

ONCE AGAIN POOR PERFORMANCE AND NEGLIGENCE BY CENTRAL TEAM. BIG SHAME TO OUR INDIA.

THEY CAN'T SOLVE THIS SMALL ISSUE. THEN HOW CAN THEY CONTROL AND LEAD OUR INDIA?REALLY VERY BAD.
